As you approach the Holstentor from the town center, there is canal with roads on both side. Its best to start with the left side and then cross over the footbridge to the other side and keep walking along the canal besides rows of beautiful houses and reach the Holstentor again. We saw people catching fish in the river, watched ducks and swans floating around and just lazily sat along the canal cafe. It really gives a feeling of Amsterdam - only much more quieter and scenic.

A lot of people visiting Lubeck often get trapped into rushing from one old/restored building to the next; some eventually retreat to shopping.

There are other options. You can walk along the An der Obertrave and associated paths along the water for far, far longer distances than you would image, and there is a lot to see. Such things of course include yet more old/restored buildings, but also some astonishingly nice wooden boats, the river itself, a working harbor and such. There are plenty of places to sit, and a few here and there to get a coffee and cake or a fish lunch. It is pretty quiet and peaceful, especially compared with the city proper.

Took this walk on a sunny afternoon and were really stunned by the calm relaxed atmosphere in the area.
There are many nice places in Lubeck, but in my view Obertrave is the best. If too warm you can sit down and enjoy a drink in one of the nice outdoor restaurants

You start this walk at the bridge at the Holstentor, turning to the right side. There are a lot of attractive Houses alongside the river. Some have restaurants and cafes with terraces at the river. There is a place where ships startshort cruises around the old town.

When you walk further along you see more nice houses, and also little paths which start between the houses. Inside, you see smaller, nicely coloured houses from the 15th century. The rich built the in their backyards to rent them to the poor. Still people live there, now they are normally the owners.

The walk along the Trave river goes on until you reach the Dome area.
