“Great breakfast, hospitality and customer service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2012

From the outside, the Hotel Consul may look unprepossessing, but then it is just a typical building in - let's face it - not a very pretty town. Once inside, we were very pleasantly surprised. Both the entrance area and rooms were obviously newly renovated and looked great.

When one arrives like us dirty and tired from cycling 50 miles, it is not a matter of course to be received by such friendly and smiling faces, as we were at Hotel Consul. And what is more, our bicycles were given a luxury conference room for the night.

The breakfast was one of the best of the trip - and even featured home-made Bircher muesli.

What was most noteworthy was the extraordinary level of customer service. I lost my glasses while at the hotel. Later that day they rang to tell us they had been found, and when we returned to England, they were waiting for us safely packaged and intact. No postage was charged

All staff - including the excellent trainees - were extremely friendly and helpful. I heard that the owners were away at the time. They can count themselves lucky to be able to leave the hotel in such good hands.

The whole hotel has been redecorated since we stayed there last time. Great improvement! New beds, some are queensize which is not suitable for two persons (except a young couple!).
The staff is as usuall very nice and helpfull.

Room Tip: Some rooms on backside have terrasses, which is nice. Remember no lift makes it difficult for people...

I have stayed in the Consul for a week and I have to say that it is not a great hotel for a business traveler. Most of the interiors are outdated (60s to 70s charm). Some minor improvements were done. For instance, the bathroom was new. My room itself was small and the bed and the furniture were simple.

My room was in the first floor and directed to the street. Unfortunatley, they used cobblestones for the street. This way I didn't have to set my alarm in the morning as every passing car would make substantial noise.

The location is fine (1min walk to the Holstenbrücke), but Kiel is a small city, so most Hotels are within walking distance of the city center. As far as I remember the service was good, too.

I would not recommend the Consul as it is too pricey for the standard it offers. I think you can get better prices, if you travel on a budget, or better rooms in Kiel if you select a different hotel.
