Having travelled in Germany for 30 years, I've stayed at many 3-5 star hotels. One of the pleasures of this amazing country is the trustworthy relationship between the star rating and the level of service obtained. This hotel, Am Segelhafen was one of the best 3 stars I've ever stayed in anywhere. The rooms were clean and comfortable and reasonably appointed for the price. The whole hotel was clean and well kept. It is well located for guests wanting to stay away from the downtown core, or who want to access the nearby Schwentine River or hospital facilities. The breakfast was fantastic for a 3 star hotel. The range of choices were excellent, the hot food was hot, and there was plenty of it. The staff were helpful, polite and courteous, but never intrusive. The hotel clientelle were a mix of business and leisure types - and also friendly and quiet.
The thing that really sets all good hotels apart from the rest, is service. This hotel is run by very nice and experienced hoteliers. The two ladies we dealt with were helpful, knowledgeable with local recommendations (The Alte Muhle restaurant is indeed wonderful!) and able to assist with problem solving on a few occasions. They really went above and beyond the call of duty.
So, when in Kiel - this is the place to stay!More
