One of the most memorable places we visited on a month-long holiday in July 2011. This is a very simple, but well-maintained memorial, but this is not what makes it so captivating. I truly had no idea as to how many peopple lost their lives at sea during the wars, and to see the walls of the memorial marked with small boats and submarines indicating the number of ships that were sunk took my breath away.
The view from the top is well-worth the ride up in the somewhat scary lift.

“Solemn tower”
Reviewed July 19, 2008

Laboe Naval Memorial (Marine-Ehrenmal)

The Naval Memorial consists of a large brick tower overlooking the sea, a “crypt” remembering the fallen sailors of all nations as well as a very good and informative exhibition of German naval forces since the 19th century.

The view from the top of the tower is amazing and the exhibition is well presented and interesting. Bear in mind though that some sections are only in German!

Make sure you buy a joint ticket for the Naval Memorial and the u-boat U-995 just across the road.

“Go for the views over Kiel Bay”
Reviewed April 15, 2008

This is a tower by the sea in the village of Laboe which lies about 10km outside Kiel. It is a memorial to the naval dead from both World Wars and was built after WWI. A memorial to German war dead probably isn't everyone's cup of tea but there are now memorials for all nationalities in the large (and slightly spooky) underground room in the middle.

The view from the top of the tower is great and on a good day you can see lots of boats in the Kiel bay. Schleswig-Holstein is incredibly flat so you can see for miles. There is also a museum about the history of the German navy with lots of model boats.

You can buy a joint ticket for both the tower and the U-Boot 995 next to the tower.
