The Herrenkrug is set in a mature forest outside Magdeburg Germany, but is not isolated. The tram line ends at the door, so it is perfect for getting around the city, to/from the train station and seeing all the sights without a car. The hotel is first class in every way. Service, cleanliness, food, rooms and common areas are to the highest standards and all rooms have views to the park. The hotel has a nice spa area with indoor pool, sauna, etc. Although the hotel is historic (Napoleon slept here), it is perfectly restored and rooms date from the 1990s when wings, designed to fit the original architecture, were added.. we found them exceptionally large, well designed and quiet. It is not an inexpensive place to eat, but the food is first class. Our rate included breakfast and it was sumptuous. No cheap plastic condiments...everything delicious. In the same park as the hotel there is an interesting Science exhibition, the history of inventions, in an unusual white cone of a building, as well as gardens and a summer slide ride.
In Magdeburg, walk from the cathedral to the town hall area along the water. You will pass the Allee Centre, the largest shopping area. The town hall has a good restaurant in the basement serving local food and across the square is a good pub.
There is a train called the HEX which runs to the main centres in the Harz. Magdeburg airport is now served by RyanAir, which means it is possible to fly to several other centres around Europe very inexpensively from Magdeburg. Berlin is 1 1/2 hours away. You can buy a rail ticket from Magdeburg to Wusterwich and a second day ticket that serves all of Brandenburg/Berlin from there at a greatly reduced fare.

Room Tip: All rooms face parkland

This hotel is in a park on the edge of the city and near the river. It is a beautiful old property which is very well maintained. Very clean, very quiet, very old world Europe. The rooms are large and as with the rest of the hotel has an art deco decor. The beds were comfortable and the linens were high quality. The restaurant was fantastic - very good food mainly Germany dishes served. The breakfast buffet was great! The meeting rooms were perfect. I used small rooms and mid size rooms for meetings. The meeting accommodations were top-notch. The only downside of this hotel for me was that the internet was pricey, there were not samples of hair products which I would expect to find in a hotel of this quality, there was only one English channel on available on the TV, and all the signs (menus, rooms brochures, etc.) in the hotel is in German. The staff speak very limited English - but they are polite, professional and very accommodating to the guests. This property is close to a tram station and a few hundred meters from the train, but it is not within close walking distance of any shops. It is perfect for a honeymoon, a business retreat or pampered relaxation (walking outside or in the fantastic spa).

This place was a pleasant surprise, as I was unsure what I would find in this former East German city. The locale is wonderful for a "city" hotel, surrounded by parkland and on the banks of the Elbe. I was able to keep my window open at night and hear nothing more than birds in the morning. The room was nice: not modern, but very comfortable with feather pillows and down comforter. the only negative was the lack of any amenities in the bathroom: only soap dispensers at the sink and shower. Not a big deal, but not something I would expect at a higher end hotel like this.
Breakfast buffet was wonderful and very German. Dinner was good with many different choices. The bar was also very comfortable and inviting.
I've also stayed at the Maritim in Magdeburg, and this is definitely a few steps above.
