A charming small city close to Dresden. I recommend to walk up the hill to the Dom. A marvelous view from there on the city with the Elbe river. Definitely a must-see place!

The cathedral dominating the skyline has a fine gothic interior. Like most I climbed up the steep hill to it on foot. There does appear to be a lift up to the cathedral square from Meisa Strasse on the northern i.e. not the old town side. At the west end is the House of Wettin Chapel chock full of their tombs. There are some fine altarpieces by Old German Masters and a number of interesting rooms beyond the choir. There are stupendous views over the Elbe Valley from the low windows.

Meissen is often overlooked when folks visiting Dresden but definitely worth a trip. The city is charming (and to me, reminded me of Toledo in Spain) with cobblestone streets that wind up to a hilltop that ends with a huge cathedral. I didn't go in but from the outside, it looked amazing. Inside, it's apparently more Romanesque than Gothic (which I prefer) but the whole experience of walking up and then gazing out over the beautiful city and the red-tiled roofs is something that's worth the hike.
