We opted for the 3 course menu, but also had an amuse bouche of tomato and shrimp to start. The starters were a thin soup of tomato with small mozzarella balls and the second was scrambled eggs and prawn mayo on black bread. Main courses were Leipzig Allerlei, which was a good selection of vegetables with crayfish and the second main was pike perch on spinach with potatoes and a lobster sauce. We then had one portion of the strawberry crumble and one cheese plate. The food and service were both very good and the set price was 39 euro per person. You could eat outside in the square or inside. Great for people-watching.

We ate outdoors on a warm evening and had an imaginative and delicious meal. Others with us felt the same. We used the suggested 3 course menu, which changes often, and were delighted; others tried other offerings. The warm mushrooms with goat cheese were delicious, all desserts pleased, and I'd go back again in a minute!

Weinstock is a pleasant cafe right on Marktplatz in the center of Leipzig. It is frequented by locals and has a full regional menu of good dishes. It is a great spot to enjoy a drink or meal and watch the passers by. The food is good German fare, very reasonably priced, the equivalent of a Paris bistro. We recently had the spring white asparagus with hollandaise sauce and a pork cutlet which was a very satisfactory dinner, prepared well.

Tucked in the corner of the market place, this restaurant provides delightfully old fashioned decor and traditional quality food with some modern twists. Service was prompt and professional and we were attended by a friendly young woman with an excellent command of English, which can’t always be expected in the former GDR. Being the ‘spargel’ season, one of us then chose the asparagus crème soup with “garlic capelli” which was very tasty, enhanced by the texture and flavour provided by the pasta. The other starter was a mille-feuille creatively constructed with slices of beetroot layering a salmon tartare. The accompanying scrambled egg and prawns added another dimension to the dish. A main course saddle of lamb with a herb crust was still pink and succulent, providing delicious juices which married perfectly with a potato-pear gratin and ham parcels of green beans. The variety of textures and balance of flavours combined to a well-rounded and delicious meal. The saddle of veal was also, as specified on the menu, medium-rare – but tender, nicely pan-fried and well-seasoned. The gnocchi was perhaps a little heavy and the dish might have been better served by a vegetable which would more readily have soaked up the delicious peppercorn sauce. The meat portion for both main courses was hearty, so we only managed to share one dessert: essentially a frozen tiramisu gateau with strawberry coulis. This was a slight disappointment because the dessert was relatively ordinary whereas everything else had been superb. This restaurant serves a number of good wines by the glass, so we variously enjoyed a Sekt, Grauburgunder and Chianti. Overall, well presented and well cooked food which created a very enjoyable evening of fine dining.
