“Great location-but”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

WIFI is sporadic......no food service at night/or bar service after 2200
Have been going there for years....and personnel always different...so you never know what you will get for service....
Hotel needs to be upgraded in services, since facilities are lacking to rate the 4 star status

The hotel is directly across the street from Leipzig Hauptbahnhof, separated from it only by the city's central tramway station. Between them, these two facilities provide easy access to the rest of Germany and to the whole of Greater Leipzig. The local airport is within easy reach by local transport services: one can be at either of the Berlin airports in well under two hours. It is thus ideally situated for those taking city breaks (all of the major sights of this town are within easy walking distance) or having business in this important commercial hub and trade fair centre. A very minor downside of the location that might be a turn off for the most timid of folk is that, in common with the environs of all main rail stations, this one does have the usual quotient of drug and alcohol-fuelled but nevertheless non-threatening vagrants.

Turning to the hotel itself, we had a large room (room 209) overlooking the side street: we did not experience the noise mentioned by some other reviewers. (As a city dweller born and raised in Central London I suppose that my tolerance of urban noise is at the upper end of the acceptable range, but I sometimes do wonder why some travellers seem to expect rural silence when staying in the centre of busy towns.) The room was impeccably clean and well maintained. The furnishings did have a little of the feel of that of an upper end DDR hotel about them (I did have experience of staying in DDR hotels in the last days of the communist regime prior to reunification and so can make that comment from personal knowledge), but from my perspective that's not a negative, Breakfast - served over long hours that would meet the needs of business people and tourists alike - was excellent, surpassed only by the grandest of German hotels. All of the staff that we encountered were friendly and efficient, had a good working knowledge of English (but were tolerant of our stumbling efforts to converse in German), and were clearly very well trained in their duties and in customer care. There was a good order of security: night porters checked our identity before handing over the room key. Service at breakfast was particularly attentive.

Two hints:
(i) in common with many hotels in German-speaking countries, the only toiletry provided was in the form of liquid soap in dispensers fixed to the bathroom walls by the wash hand basin and in the shower cubicle. If you're looking for anything more elaborate including solid soap take it along with you.
(ii) if you are looking to eat good Saxon fare surrounded by German people don't go to Auerbachs Keller (the food's OK, but the restaurant is very, very touristy). Go instead to the Ratskeller in the Neues Rathaus or to Thuringer Hof. Zill's Tunnel is also worth a look.

Room Tip: There are bedrooms on the first floor on the route to the breakfast room. If you are particularly...

It's an allright hotel, but never what you expect from 4 stars! We had a room with a kitchenette, which would have been fine if there had been any pots or pans. Breakfast was basic and over-crowded, the nice Easter-Europian waitresses trying, but lacking training and had too much to do. There is one computer with Internet access in the bar, but nobody in the whole hotel knew the password to access it. The parking place has no tarmac, and costs extra. And then, no fault of the hotel, there is a large building site just opposite, and it is very, very noisy. It also looks as if it will bethere for a considerable time to come. The room itself was quite large, the towels thin, the furniture looked as if thrown in haphazardly. The location just across from the railway station is superb. If you get a cheap deal, it's ok, but if you look for four-stars luxury, look elesewhere.

Room Tip: Try to get one that does not look out to the building site (if there is)

The hotel is well located, walking distance from city centre attractions, has car park next to it, its clean and breakfast was fine. Staff speak good English. Some small areas could be improved, like more staff at breakfast. But over all clean and pleasant. It has a small kitchen and it took me until the end of the stay to find a supermarket (Railway mall). However, there is major construction going on next door, it wasn't as noisy as I feared but something to be aware of, they claim to have high speed wifi, it is free but hardly works, when I complained at reception they said, 'we know'. Also there is a bar where we were invited for drinks at 6pm when we checked in but it was locked, never saw anyone in there!

Room Tip: Ask for a room any from the construction at the front

within walking distance to the old town to go out. Good sized rooms with kitchenette and fridge, modern simple design. Clean. only the missing air-condition can be a problem on hot summer days. Parking is close to the hotel, fenced in but not locked and secured, 9 Euros per night. breakfast okay.

Hotel Royal International is conveniently located in front of the main railway station of Leipzig and on the edge of the city centre. All major attractions are a few walking minutes away. The rooms are vey spacious (at least I was given a small studio, with kitchenette), and they are clean and modern. Some problems in the bathroom, where the shower box displayed some bad accumulation of dirt on its basis. This was on the outside, and it was nothing particularly nasty, but from a 4 starts hotel I expect more attention to such details.
Also the toiletries are not up to a 4-starts level: soap dispensers, and nothing much else. The TV set is rather difficult to use, and there is no channel list. Not a problem for me, but some people might be annoyed.
The breakfast was extremely good and varied. This would deserve this hotel a 4 out of 5 in my evaluation, but the carpets in the corridor were stained. I do not understand why do hotels insist on laying carpets everywhere, while hard surfaces are munch easier to keep clean and tidy.

Room Tip: The rooms with the bow windows are probably the largest.
