“Historic Green Vault”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 8, 2012

The collection is extensive and interesting but unfortunately photos are not allowed. The audio tour (included in the price of the ticket) does an excellent job of introducing each room and providing additional information about specific pieces. It is great that you can spend as much time as you want in each room.

What can be improved is the clarity of the directions as to how to enter the exhibit. We purchased our tickets in advance online, as advised by a friend, and used them to enter the other exhibits until our scheduled time to enter the Historic Green Vault. We entered the first door and picked up the audio guide at the scheduled time and began to look at the pieces. By the time we figured out that this entryway was actually the end of the exhibit, 15 minutes had passed and the lady taking our tickets by the second door was extremely rude.

So when you visit, know that after you pass through the first ticket check and receive the audio guide, proceed directly to the second entrance to enter the exhibit.

“Eclectic assortment of artwork - mostly good”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 14, 2012

Fun to walk around the Gallery district - especially considering this is former East Germany. A lot of glass-work; some beautiful antiques including embroidered clothing and tablecloths; lots of jewellry; interesting things to take home for your house - if you have the room for them; can sometimes see the influence of mid-century modern German expressionist work

“amazing sight to see”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2012

This was a highlight of my trip to Dresden, Germany! The amazing gold work and carved ivory pieces were a true wonder to see. Wonderful solid gold pieces of art encrusted with gems. Intricate ivory, silver and gold pieces. The visit was then topped off by the green wall. An amazing display of a huge green diamond pendant. Wow. Truely a must for art lovers, or jewelery and gem collecters.

“One of the best collections in the world”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2012

I don't think that most of the other reviews here actually understand what the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden *is*. It is NOT the Old Master's Gallery. It is a consortium of 12 different museums which collectively form the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden. It encompasses many different buildings in several parts of the city. If you visit Dresden, chances are you're visiting most of the buildings which house its collections. So, reading someone's review that says "Focused collection, The Sistine Madonna by Rafael is the start of the show and with god reason! It is well worth seeing. The rest of the collection is devoted to 17th and 18th century European painting," is NOT an accurate reflection of what the Kunstsammlungen actually is. The collections are one of the most diverse in the entire world. It is more apt to compare the Kunstsammlungen to an institution like the Smithsonian in the U.S.

Of course, the Kunstsammlungen has so many objects that not all of them are on display. In fact, the Kunstsammlungen is still sorting out exactly what it has, since some of it was displaced due to certain world conflicts... However, it is developing a sophisticated cataloging system that is one of the best in Germany to do so. In the process, they are also digitizing some of their print collections which can be found on their website, and is a useful resource if you have a particular interest in something which might not be on display; http://www.skd.museum/en/
