Owner description: This 394-foot mural along the wall in the Royal Mews courtyard depicts a parade of Saxony rulers, some walking, others on horseback. Scratched into stucco by the artist in 1876, the mural was later recast onto porcelain tiles and, incredibly, survived the 1945 bombing of Dresden that destroyed most buildings.

“It's free and well worth the minor effort of going there”

This wall is just so impressive. Unbelievable that it stayed in such a good condition all these years. Anyone that visits Dresden visits the old city -- there is no reason to miss this wall. It's free, its on the street and well worth the minor effort of going there.

“Impressive indeed!”

Unbelievable to realiye that these tiles were hand painted and fired in Meissen, and withstood the bombing of Dresden. The history portrayed in such a stylish manner can only speak volumes of the elegant people that lived here.

“History on the wall”

Interesting and original way of displaying the Dresden rulers in Dresden tiles on a huge wall. You can see the changes of posture and clothing styles.

“Well worth a visit.”

The Procession of Princes, or Fürstenzug in German, is at the Royal Mews. It should not be missed, but, to understand it fully either join a guided tour or take a guide book. It is a 102 metre long mural which depicts a parade of the rulers of the House of Wettin since 1127.

The 35 noblemen are on horseback, the soldiers and other people are on foot. Konrad the Great from the 12th century is at the beginning of the procession and Friedrich August III who ruled between 1904 and 1918 as Saxony's last king is at the end.

When the painting of the 1870's started to deteriorate it was replaced in 1906/7 with about 25,000 ceramic tiles from the Meissen Porcelain Factory which amazingly survived the devastation of February 1945.

“Lovely wall”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 2, 2012

Tiled wall of Princes. Very interesting family tree. But can't get a decent photo as it's marred by street signs and shadows adn peoples' heads! However the history makes up for the disappointments.
