Reviewed June 2, 2013

We spent a long weekend here while visiting Dresden for the first time.
We travel quite a lot worldwide and had booked this hotel on its name, location and facilities.
The first impression is "WOW" and the reception is acceptable and friendly. However the room we were given was of average size with only one armchair.
We are used to, in this price category unlimited and not complicated WIFI access, what we got was 15 mins. free and then pay WIFI!! This is definitely not on.
The price of the breakfast at Eur 28 per head is a deterrent and the local snack bars are full in the mornings with hotel residents.
The swimming pool was as cold as Alaska and not very impressive for a Hotel that advertises itself as a spar hotel.
My wife had a massage which she described a "Business like", not that it was not competently carried out but she has had better experience.
The plus points are the location and the Karl May bar.
We enjoyed our stay in Dresden but it was not enhanced by the hotel stay so we must say for the price our experience was average.

Dear Mr. klopstock,

Thank you very much for reviewing your recent stay with us.

We were happy to read that your first impression of Dresden has wowed you and that you liked the hotel and especially the Karl May Bar.

Moreover, we offer our sincere apologies for the inconveniences you experienced, particularly in regards to Wi-Fi access and the Spa Lounge. We are aware that the log-in process may be perceived as not necessarily intuitive and, therefore, we are currently developing a more customer-friendly solution to this issue. Meanwhile, we will work on improving our communication of the available Wi-Fi options and the present log-in procedure. We have also forwarded you comment to the Supervisor of the Spa Lounge immediately who has had a meeting with the spa team to make sure similar inconveniences will be prevented from reoccurring.

Dear Mr. Klopstock, we hope we were able to alleviate your irritation so you are able to look back to your stay in Dresden with positive memories.

We would be delighted to welcome you to the Taschenbergpalais again and remain with kindest regards,

Your Team at Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski

This was my second visit to Dresden and I spent three very pleasant and comfortable nights here with my wife and mother-in-law at the end of May. The first class service and spacious interiors made the miserable weather more bearable. The pool on the top floor is small but very well maintained and during my stay it was never crowded or noisy.
Even the standard rooms are very comfortable, and from ours we looked straight into the Zwinger.
I usually don't like paying extra for breakfast, but here it is absolutely worth every euro cent, even though the quality of service can vary.
To summarize: it's worth paying the extra for superior service and comfort.

This hotel is outstanding for so many reasons including the beautiful building in which the hotel is situated, the wonderful, caring staff, the food in the dining room and the bistro, and the many amenities that are available. In addition, the hotel is located right in the center of historic Dresden. For travelers who have never visited Dresden, you can't imagine how many beautiful classic old palaces and castles, cathedrals, including the famous Frauenkirche, and other gorgeous old buildings are located in Dresden. Fortunately many have been restored following the WWII bombing of Dresden. The very helpful concierge at the hotel, Markus Walch, can give you recommendations as to places to see and things to do. I highly recommend this hotel!!! We would never stay any place else when we come to Dresden.

This place is stylish, swanky, a great palace and has superb rooms.

After a tour of Dresden and dining at the Luisenhof, there was nothing better than to stay at the Kempinski in the heart of Dresden. I had read previous reviews of people complaining about the TVs, but Dresden is known for its culture, art and history and I don't think the lack of English speaking TV and a big old box should affect this hotel in any way. Building flat screens into the rooms may be difficult in this 300 year old palace.

Go to the Opera, do a walking tour of the city and enjoy the surroundings. I didn't find it very expensive at all, but as we pay so much for hotels in Canada, getting a room in this hotel for $200 was a bargain. It was definitely the most expensive breakfast (~$70 per person) I've ever had in my life, but room service was worth it.

North American hotels can learn from the service provided by the hotel concierge. I've been going to Dresden every year since 1991 and have seen a lot of changes. Congrats on the rebuild of August the Strong's old palace. It is truly a 5 star hotel.

Best location, great palace, good restaurant but...
I booked 2 rooms, a superior and a deluxe.
I'm pretty sure that we did not get what we booked and paid for. On their website the picture of the standard room leaves no doubt on the downgrading they "offered" us... Discussion was impossible with the desk. I asked for a list or a map showing the room type by room number; they said it did not exist...
It was also a surprise to discover that there was no soap, no shower gel and no shampoo in the bathroom when we arrived at 10 PM. We eventually got some soap and shampoo but had to wait for the next day for the shower gel.
Being a gold member of the GHA program I'm entitled to free internet and a bottle of water per night. We stayed 7 nights we never got the free water after the first night and at check out they wanted to charge internet. They had now clue what the benefits are for a GHA gold member. This was not the only mistake on the bill.
We had the strange feeling that the hotel management is somehow discriminating non german customers or at least customers they consider not being good enough for them.
My bill was around 3.700 € for 7 nights, I was expecting more consideration than a room downgrade.
I must say that besides reservation, check in and check out personnel, all others were very kind and helpfull.
We really liked the hotel grounds but I don't think we'll go back next December.
One wants to feel welcomed.

Dear Mr. nico m,

Thank you for reviewing your stay from 21 to 28 December 2012 with us . We were happy to learn that you enjoyed the hotel’s features and ambience.

Moreover, we are offering our sincere apologies for the negative experiences you had at the front desk. Please rest assured that none of our staff would ever be inclined to discriminate against any person be it our guests or their fellow colleagues at any time or for any reason. Our integrity is of our utmost concern at all times and we cannot emphasize enough how the key values of culture, tolerance and open-mindedness are guiding our actions and behavior on a daily basis. We are deeply sorry that the situation has made you feel unwelcomed and we have forwarded your comment immediately to our Director of Front Desk who will be having a serious meeting with his team. We are also investigating, in how far a potential language barrier may have been contributing to the issue at hand and we are considering additional language training sessions for the staff as well as a refresher concerning the different GHA program levels and their associated benefits. Unfortunately, we only found out at departure that you are registered with the GHA loyalty program so we could remove the respective charges accordingly with your approval.

Furthermore, we would never “downgrade” our guests without consent which would neither be legal nor would it be in line with our aforementioned values. However, we do apologise if the pictures shown on our website were slightly different from your actual accommodation. Please note that these images show sample rooms owing to the fact that in 1995 the hotel was meticulously reconstructed according to the original plans from the year 1706. Therefore, every room comes in its very individual size and shape.

Dear Mr. nico m, we hope that we were able to make some amends with this letter and to alleviate your negative memories so you will be able to look back at your journey with happiness and joyfully remember the city of Dresden.

We sincerely hope that we may welcome you again to the Taschenbergpalais to prove our diligence to you.

With kindest regards from Dresden,
Your Team at Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski

Kempinsky's style is swanky and the public areas of this hotel are certainly that! The rooms are large, but the space isn't particularly well planned. Also, the TV system in the room was too difficult to navigate- I couldn't find an english speaking tv station other than Al jazeera! In common with many german hotels, the pillows provided were one very large pillow and one small thin pillow, which is just weird unless you're german! ( they did bring more pillows on request)
My biggest criticism was the gym- poorly equipped, no water, no A/C, only one german tv station, and no attendent, even though it was part of the spa area. It's not as if the city is so big that everyone gets their exercise walking!

Dear j0gli,

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay with us.
Furthermore, we would like to take this opportunity to apologise for our shortfall in communicating to you upon check in the availability of a room comfort menu in every room offering, amongst others, a broad selection of alternative bedding options. Also, a channel overview is available through the “menu” button on the TV remote control – another important detail which we will work on communicating more clearly to our guests in future. Of course, we have immediately forwarded your comment regarding the problems you encountered with regards to the gym to the Spa supervisor.

Dear j0gli, we thank you again for your honest feedback which we consider a very important source in our endeavour to improve our service and performance standards on a daily basis.

Okay -- it's expensive -- but worth every penny! Right across the street from the Green Vault. Concierge will get you tickets if you didn't book early. The desk representative will personally escort you to your room. Service is only beginning there! The rooms and suites are beautiful. The city is historic. There is so much to see and do. Just a wonderful city and place to stay!
