We visited this place whilst stopping over at Trier for a night as we fancied eating German. The staff gave a good welcome and helped us by providing an English menu. I had trout and my son had a schnitzel both of which were very tasty. The beer was top notch too.

This is a nice traditional restaurant serving German cuisine with some specific Trier specialties. Being a vegetarian, it did have two options - the farmer's pan and the mushroom sauce dumplings. Both were nice though I personally found the farmer's pan to be better. The portions are big and sufficient.

The interiors are nice and gives a traditional feel. The staff was friendly.
The restaurant is very close to the hauptmarkt and Porta Nigra. When you are walking from Porta Nigra to hauptmarkt, take the left road Glockenstraße. There are two good restaurants on that road and this is one of them.

We live just down the road, and this is one of the places in Trier that we visit quite regularly. Usually, we leave fully satisfied with the food, while service can be a little patchy. There's one waitress there who's absolutely brilliant - fully in control of everything and very, very efficient. Her colleagues sometimes don't quite live up to that standard, but service is by no means dismal.
Food is good, with traditional local German fare taking up a large part of the menu. It's also the only place I know in Trier that has horse on the menu - well worth trying out! Portions are quite big, and if you're not starving for food, a side salad and their onion soup (apparently quite famous in Trier) will be plenty to give you a full belly. Sometimes, they give you some fresh bread and curd cheese ("Quark") as a tasty (free) starter, but I have never been able to work out what determines whether you get it or not. ;-)
The beer on draft is "Kraft" - locally brewed in Trier (and really quite good!). Now that they have moved over to the other side of the road (while the old building is under renovation), they even have a choice of three types of Kraft beer - much appreciated!
On the whole, I can fully recommend a visit to the Glocke; once the minor service glitches are taken care of (it did take far too long to get the bill last Friday!), I'll give this one five stars.

If you're in Trier and want to try a traditional restaurant with typical dishes with great atmostphere and reasonable prices, this is the place for your you. Kräftiges paniertes Kotelette is my favourite, but there are also many good dishes in the weekly menu. Staff seems to change quite often, probably also in the kitchen.

It was on the right side of the road but has moved 50 metres down the road on the left from the main shopping street. The old place was actually "old" which we had been visiting twice a year for the last 12 - 15 years.

It had changed hands in the last couple of years, the menu dusted down and new glasses. Now it had wandered down the road to renovated premises with a one year lease, whether the old Zur Clocke will re-open and it will move back again, only time will tell.

The atmosphere in the new places isn't as good. The food is still up to the same reasonably high standard. The staff are the same friendly, helpful student labour force that they have always used over the years, with the old faces moving down the road. The geography and law students.

The new place might grow on one. The toilets downstairs are now swish and you do get free splash on fragrances in the loo so you can return to your meal smelling perfect for the evening ahead. Mind you it could have been a shop lifter from Douglas who deposited the sampler in the loo. Possibly not, basically the student labour force organised the move across the road and revamped the place for the owner, well that's what we were told.
