We selected this hotel to enjoy a dinner in teh restaurant facing the Porta Nigre. But upon arrival we were told that the restaurant wass closed because of no sufficient reservations, but we could still et in the Add to bar/coffeshop which also faces the porta nigre. When we showed up at this place we were told it was fully booked even that several tables were not dressed. Thanks to the help of th frontdesk w could find nice restaurant. Funny, when we cam back the same tables were still undressed - I guess the hotel assigns tables base on the basis of available personnel and not base on customer needs.
The room was super though, but breakfast not so good with scrambled eggs totally dried out

The main asset of Mercure Hotel Porta Nigra is it's impeccable location just in front of the Porta Nigra. So don't forget to ask for a room with a view. The rooms are basic but clean. The breakfast is good.

Hotel just opened after construction, very accommodating and excellent attention to detail. Right across the street from the Porte Negra. Construction in progress but staff gave us a voucher for 2 glasses of wine because of the construction.

As always this hotel affords excellent service from its staff. Rooms are large and clean.
However do not stay on the top floor in winter/spring when outside temperatures fall. The heating system is old and cannot adequately heat many rooms on this floor. This happened to myself and family in Dec 2012, was ok in Dec 2014 when temperatures were higher than average, but happened again for our visit 16/12/2016-18/12/2016.

Trier is a secret gem of Germany. Trier's history dates back to the 4th century BC but the city's 1st century Roman history is amazing.

Mercure Hotel Trier Porta Nigra is just across the road - less than 100m from the Porta Nigra and the old part of the city. The hotel is also an easy walk (with luggage) from the railway station. We stayed two nights and wish we had stayed longer; in both Trier and the hotel.

Our room was large, very clean and comfortable; perhaps not 5 star luxury but certainly 4 star top quality. The view from our room of the Porta Nigra, especially at night however, was 10 star !!

All the staff were very friendly, cooperative and knowledgeable. Breakfast was very good with a wide range of hot and cold dishes. We ate dinner both nights in the hotel bistro/restaurant and were very happy with both the food and the cost. Special mention should be made of the two very nice ladies who served us, despite some language difficulties, their service was excellent.

We can Definitely Recommend the Mercure Hotel Trier Porta Nigra.

Room tip: Ask for a room facing the Porta Nigra
