Ordered one of the seasonal specials at their counter, 'Baked asparagus, potato and king prawns' for 13.80 Euros, it arrived about 20 minutes later clearly lacking any asparagus! Following my query, 3 spears were delivered to add to the dish!! It must have been a change of shift at 18.00 and service was patchy and indifferent. Just not good value or service for the money spent.

If you're prepared to go along with the strange self-service nature of this place - you order at the till and then your food is served to you - and the strangeness of a fish shop/restaurant located about as far away from the coast as it's possible to be, then you'll get a fantastic plate of food here at quite remarkably keen prices. In our case, the day's special of beautifully cooked whole Dover sole, with accompanying vegetables, for less than the equivalent of 12 UK pounds apiece - about half what you'd have to pay in London. Great local Mosel whites are served by the glass or bottle and again won't break the bank. Not the most atmospheric place to eat - I'm not sure what it would have been like if the upstairs winebar had been full of noisy drinkers - but if the quality and value of the food is your main priority, you can't go wrong.

Many of the standard restaurants in Trier are not very good. The pizza/Italian place across from Oeschle is not very good and very slow service (not hard-working waiters' fault--just two for a large dining area). Vietnamese restaurant we ate in was quite mediocre and more "Pan Asian adapted for what they think are Western tastes but aren't". So we wound up eating at Oeschle twice, the only good meals we had in Trier. The system--you order at counter from blackboard menues or a printed menue; they give you a numbered flag in a bottle and you take it to table where waitress then brings it to you. The fish is absolutely fresh, very nicely done, and reasonably priced.
But the real star of this restaurant is upstairs--at the wine tasting bar. The system here is that you tell them whether you want 4, 6, or 120 varieties of wine to taste. That's right: they have 120 Mosel River Valley wines! I don't suggest the 120 version. We did the 4 wine choices and it was great as each "taste" is actually half a glass of wine. The wonderful wine master who's English is good but slow sometimes, really knows all the wines. you tell him the kind of wines you like and he gives you a choice of dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet, sweet, and then you go around to the 120 bins of wine choices with him and he recommends particular wines. Every one of the 4 we drank was excellent. The most dry and the most sweet were superb and we wound up buying bottles to take home with us. Riesling wines in the U.S. have a bad rap b/c everyone thinks they are just sweet, often too sweet. But there are really dry ones too that we don't often see in the U.S. We ordered a cheese platter with our wine tasting options and it was also excellent. The prices are quite reasonable for the wine tasting and cheese. I think we spent a total of about 25 Euros for the 4 choices and the large cheese platter (we had a big lunch at the restaurant and the wine and cheese was our "dinner.") If you come to Trier this is the place to eat and drink if you can't get out to do wine tasting all around the Mosel.

Delicious fish dishes and wine that goes with it perfectly. Very nice place for lunch/dinner, pleasant ambience on upper floor. Menu is changing often so will definitely go there again to try other dishes, glad I finally discovered that place!!!

This restaurant serves very good fish, the pricing is ok. They have a great selection of wines and they offer different wine tastings. In summer time you can sit outside.
