Both in the old and in the new wings the history of Trier and its rulers is presented in a most accessible manner. From coins and small bronzes to massive sculpture that could not be saved in situ, everything is there, and well labelled too. In German - so, non German speakers may find a leaflet in other languages useful. At the end wait a nice restaurant - and fountains in the Electoral palace gardens.

We had some difficulty with this venue. We used the internet site for the opening times and cost, to begin with. We arrived early and found that there was a special "roman" encampment and games outside. When the museum itself finally opened (more than 45 minutes late) we learned that the cost INCLUDED the encampment. There was NO other way to view the inside exhibits. AND the cost was NOT that listed on the web site.
Being barely a German speaker or reader, the extremely few exhibit signs had an English translation available. The pamphlet guide we were given when we bought the tickets was totally German. While it is clearly a museum of great value for this region of Germany through the ages, literally, it was difficult to fine one´s way through and to difficult to understand. Too bad!

The Museum is unfussy and well-explained. It is especially good on the Roman period and on the Middle Ages.
