“Very nice pedestrian area with multiple sites”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 31, 2012

Good walking area that has several sites in the pedestrian area. Lovely historic fountain and churches face this square as well as 17th century houses. The tourist office has a planned walking tour (in multiple languages) that takes in the Hauptmarkt and surrounding sites.

“I am surprised that the Christmas Market does not feature!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 30, 2012

The thing that makes Trier special is in the 4 weeks leading up to Christmas there is a magical Christmas traditional German Market! We have been 2 out of the last 3 years and Trier is worth a visit if only for this Market!

“Very nice, especially at Christmas time”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 28, 2012

The Hauptmarkt in Trier may not be the most thrilling place on earth but it comes alive on a winter's night. Definitely recommend getting some Gluehwein and perusing the many stalls which the market has to offer.

“Enjoyable copy”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 17, 2012

It's a nice, large, vibrant marketplace but little is original since 75% of Trier was destroyed or damaged in WW2. Even the cross is a copy although the original is stored safely.
You see these reconstructions in so many German cities which were even more heavily damaged (i.e. Nuremberg, Cologne, etc) that try to capture the pre-war aesthetic but they all tend to look like the same stucco, half-timbered copies. Kudos though for restoring or incorporating what was left after the war's ravages, especially the old churches.
Fortunately, there is still plenty of history left in Trier including the Roman ruins that weren't destroyed. The Haupmarkt is not where I spend a lot of time in Trier except for shopping, eating and drinking but the area remains lively.
