When walking aroung the city of Trier, the Ratskeller restaurant is a good place to have a nice lunch. On a Sunday in late April, the two of us enjoyed a Kalbsteak with Spargel (white asparagus) and Zwiebelrostbraten. Both were well prepared and very tasty. Add a couple of side salads, sparkling water, two glasses of local Riesling wine; and you have a filling and flavorful lunch. And the cost is a good value.

The dining area is below street level and has classic arched ceiling. The lighting is low. The environment perfect for conversation among friends or romance for couples.

Overall a very enjoyable experience.

The restaurant situated in the main square - but down a flight of steps - has a lovely interior. The restaurant, when we went was very quiet - only two other tables occupied. The food was plentiful (very large portions) but quantity does not always mean quality - and this was my overriding impression of this place. However, if you are hungry and just want to be filled up with something that will not be expensive and wash it down with a beer - this is the place.

In the centre of Trier, on the market place where the christmas market is held every year you find the ratskeller ('council cellar'). The setting is rather sober and they serve a mixture between russian and eastern european cuisine. My girlfriend had borsjt which she found delicious and I had a carpaccio of beetroot with a tartare of 'matjes' (dutch: maatjes, a young haring) and apple. The tartare was way to salty but the beetroot was delicious. Next we had salmon-trout and dear steak 'sar nikolay'. both were very nice although my meat was well done in stead of the medium rare as one would expect. Service was ok. I would rate it a tourist attraction but not a place to visit frequently.
