The walking zone (Fussgangerzone) in Trier is filled with excellent shops with a huge variety of - well - everything one could possibly be looking for. There are many bakeries, even more ice cream shops, and the ubiquitous inexpensive pizzeria. It's nearly always crowded in the Altstadt of Trier due to tourists and students so we were looking for something still close by to our hotel, where we didn't have to wait for hours to be seated, and where you could carry on a conversation with a person sitting just across a small table from you. A desk agent at our hotel recommended Ristorante Fornelli and off we went.

This deceptively small restaurant is just around the corner from the MacDonald's downtown and easily could be missed. You enter on the ground floor and climb up one flight of stairs to the restaurant. There are at least 3 rooms for dining. One room was being used for a large party so we chose one of the few tables near the bar.

The menu is extensive with many typical Italian dishes; however, the menu is the same as any other pizzeria. On it you'll find every imaginable combination of pizza topping, the usual pasta dishes, and there are some German dishes as well plus salads. If you order pasta, for change you can order 3 varieties of home-made pasta. I ordered the Pasta Arrabbiata and my spouse ordered a veggie pizza with Insalata Mista. Coming from the kitchen, we saw more substantial salads being served, several with huge scampi - those looked really good. In the small bar area, there were 2 other tables near us and everyone at those tables ordered pizzas.

Not sure if the crusts were home-made on any of the pizzas, all were exactly the same size, the same shape. The pizza at our table was certainly ok, nothing special but satisfactory. For the price of 6,50 Euro, a good deal and enough for one. The pasta dish did seem to have home-made red sauce but Arrabbiata it was not. The pasta was maybe a minute past being al-dente but not mushy. The sauce was bland, no additional parmesan was offered. At 7,50 Euro, the serving was appropriately sized. A word about the bread served - WONDERFUL - warm and flavorful.

We also had a 1/2 liter of wine plus a 1/2 liter of mineral water. Entire meal was 29,50 Euro. Atmosphere was friendly, the waiters attentive, and you could talk with your neighbors if so inclined. We'd go back but only because it was not packed with rowdy guests. Still, if you are looking for fine dining - you'll have to keep looking.

Went to this restaurant after reading the positive reviews. I wouldn't say this restaurant is terrible but I also wouldn't say it was great. The pizzas were too thick and very average in taste. The salad was also average and came drenched (drowned) in dressing, but we noticed that all the salads we ordered in Trier came with an abundance of dressing. Didn't get offered bread as you normally do in Italian restaurants. The place was pretty much full (whereas other restaurants in the area weren't) so I guess it's doing something right. The couple next to us had pastas and they looked ok. We went to another Italian restaurant in Trier on our last night called Albarone which had much better food, decor and service. In fact, that was the best meal we had in Trier and we would recommend it highly.

Very good food, friendly service and really not expensive. If you are a bit in hurry, or do not want to spend hours for lunch, this is the place to go. Also a great place for families and large groups.
My prefered dish: ravioli spinaci
