First meal here was a group dinner with a Rick Steves tour. Food was ecxellent and well prepared. Upon trying to decide where to eat at a later date, chose Zum Domstein again. Once again was not disappointing and service was average but friendly. Did not need a reservation even for a party of 4 on a busy day because we chose to eat inside not in the courtyard. All dishes that our party had were excellent and came within a reasonable time frame.

Based on the reviews here on TA, we selected this as the first restaurant to have dinner, on our first visit to Trier - it didn't disappoint ! Great atmosphere & honest food perfected in treatment for the meats paired with delectable sauces (must try #273 for the medley lamb haunch, fillet of beef & pork with accompanying sauces). Tried many similar dishes in Germany but this one takes the cake! Grilled medallion of stag in port wine sauce is different but delicious. The authentic Roman menu will have to wait for a 2nd visit. Note : it would be a waste if you came here and ordered normal dishes like salad or quiche, you can do that in France.

I always take my first meal upon arrival in Trier at the Zum Domstein, and have done so since 1991. Rather pricey (3-4 on a 5-point scale), but a good meal.

If you have a day in Trier and desire a place that not only serves the usual German faire, but also something a little different Zum Domstein is good bet. The Stag is always delicious if you want a gamey dish. Of course, for something completely different you can try the historic Roman menu available in the renovated basement. Of course, they have all the usual favorites as well like Schnitzel. The prices are good and staff are always friendly and helpful.
