Das Altes Schiff Museum is a kind of time machine. During the construction of an annex to the Mainz Hilton Hotel, the remains of seven ancient roman ships were discovered entombed in the muddy banks of the Rhine. These have been carefully preserved and analysed.

Two of the vessels were warships and these have been reconstructed at full size. The others were cargo barges and scale models show what they were originally like.

There are many interactive exhibits and a couple of interesting films. It is well worth a visit. You can get there by SBahn.(Romisches Teatre station) or bus or just walk north along the Rhine bank.

I didn't even know this place existed but it was near my hotel so I dropped in the look around. It's a free museum. Several old Roman shipwrecks were discovered in the sediment when excavation work was done to build the Hilton hotel in Mainz. The ship fragments allowed for a study of the old way of building. And they created a couple of reproductions full-scale of what the boats would have looked like. Some interpretation in English which was nice to help understand what you were looking at.

The museum is free and the quality of the displays is top notch. As others have said the Engish translations on a lot of the displays is missing. However, it is pretty easy to follow along with what they have done. The reproductions of these ships is truly amazing. The ships are reconstructed from remnants found in the city when they were digging. Pretty remarkable...

I visited the museum not sure what to expect. It was a pleasant surprise to find out the museum was free to visit. Most of the written information was in German, with some translations of the major display introductions. However, I was able to pick up a lot of information from the excellent pictures and graphics that were presented with artifacts and recreations. Would highly recommend stopping by. But you will have to buy a post-card, as pictures are not allowed.
