Underneath the shopping center the Romerpassage (very close to the Landesmuseum) you can visit the remains of the ancient temple of Isis and Mater Magna, which are shown in a nice, kind of mysterious lighting. The entrance is free, so you can just pop in after shopping. In the room with the remains also some finds and artefacts are shown with some explanation.

It was very clean & comfortable, but very dark lighting (for the purposeful effects). It looked fake, like a replica, too tidy for ruins. It was donation only.

Cool little place for history buffs. However, it is a bit hard to find as it is inside/underneath the shopping mall that was build over the ruins. Admission was free and I spent about 1 hr looking at the artifacts and ruins. Make sure you ask at the information desk for an English translation of the interpretive signs. They have a booklet with almost all the information translated. I would recommend at least a small visit, even for those not interested in history.

This is one of my favorite spots to visit in Mainz. I have been here at least 5 times and enjoy it more each visit. The way they have the exhibitions, lighting and sound set up is really good and you feel like you are in the old temple. Love the video with the woman buying the "curse". Especially since it isn't a real language and everyone, no matter where they are from can enjoy it.

Well worth a visit if you are in Mainz.

Discovered when the Hilton Hotel chain began excavations for a new hotel, the Temple of Isis is located under a shopping centre and could be a little hard to find if you were visiting on a DIY basis. The guide was easy to understand (English speaking tour) and happy to answer all our questions. There is a vast amount of Roman history in Mainz and this is a fascinating addition. Photos allowed
