“Pleasantly Surprised”
Reviewed June 29, 2013

I've stayed one night at Novotel Mainz (for business) and was pleasantly surprised.
Room was very specious (#401), bathroom was of good size and very clean and breakfast was very rich. The hotel also has a nice swimming pool.

On the down side, reception was busy both when I've checked and when I've checked out, therefore both took some time. Having said that, the staff at the reception were pleasant and answered any question raised with patience.

Bottom line: While in previous visits to Mainz I've stayed at the Hilton Mainz, In my next visit I shall endeavor to re-elect the Novotel property.

We arrived after 1 am as we said in our booking but the welcome was not great which kind of set a tone. After a long journey I didnt want this. My wife didn't like the hotel, too far out of town up a hill, poor toiletries, shower went hot and cold. I was happy with the reception staff in the morning who were helpful. Wifi is only free in reception which is true of other hotels in Germany. We moved to another hotel which was much better.

I have stayed at this hotel many times over the years and feel it is worthy of high accolade. The staff are experienced and customer service is their highest focus which is a rare trait to find in modern hotels. The food is high quality and local specialties are always on the menu. The hotel are used to late check ins and Early departures and the fixtures and fittings are excellent. Overall a great hotel run by people who know what they are doing!

Nice modern hotel in a residential area above the city of Mainz. The room is a typical comfortable and clean Novotel. Breakfast was excellent. It is easy to get down to the city center of Mainz, about a twenty minute walk. You can take the elevator in the apartment building next to the hotel and go down several stories. There is a also a very nice view of the city from the terrace of that building. Mainz, founded by the Romans, is an interesting city. It has a famous Romanesque cathedral and the impressive Gutenberg museum. I would have liked to visit the Roman museum. We toured the town in the morning and then checked out, but Mainz would have been worth an entire day.

Service was very polite and helpful. Rooms had good size and were clean. My room faced the backyard with singing blackbirds and green areas. I could hear the elevator, but other than that it was pretty quiet in the room. Breakfast good. Good location in between the train station and the old city center.

We unfortunately checked in late and checked out first thing the next morning so could not make use of the spa area which was a major selling point in our initial booking. However, the front counter staff were pleasant and assisted us with recommended visits in the town and the room was clean and warm. The only negative was the exorbitant charge for parking overnight, 11 Euro's for one night. However this did not dampen what was a good experience in Mainz.

Room Tip: Facing the road gives a good view of the surrounding architecture. Double glazing ensures all sound...

The hotel is in an excellent location for any visitor who wants to be able to easily walk in to the city centre but doesn't want the noise of city centre life. The staff were universally polite and friendly. The quality of the food at breakfast was excellent and comprehensive.
There are three aspects that need improvement. One, the mattresses and pillows were basic and did not aid restful sleep. Two, the breakfast staff did not check with guests about the availability of coffee, leading to empty pots being left on tables that had been re-set for the next guests. Three, the number of guests in a room is known to the hotel and yet the rooms had no additional robe, towels or bedding.
