We were driving through Essen and decided to stop for dinner. I like Tripadvisors suggested restaurants, but for Essen, we made it to #11 before we found one that didn't say American food or $$$. Luckily this place is AWESOME. You can tell by the reviews it's a local favorite not a big tourist stop. It's a little bit off the main street, not too hard to find. The food is all reasonably priced and everything we ordered was delicious. I has the Papa Relleno (stuffed potato) it was kind that of like funeral potatoes with ham and corn rolled in a ball and deep fried. It was something I've never seen before and it was spooky good. My wife had a Hungarian flatbread with sour cream, bacon, tomatos and basil. It was also really good. The waitress was super nice (unusual for Germany) and the service was fast. I really couldn't ask for anything more. If I'm ever back in Essen I'd like to stop there again and try some of the other things on the menu. They have outdoor dining but it's not much of a view. That will be of no concern when your food comes. Trust me.
