I have travelled to Essen a lot over the last few years but had a short notice trip and city centre hotels all full. Hotel is a fair way out, but has a tram stop a couple of minutes away. We used taxis to the centre which cost €12 to €15. Also walked to the city centre , about 45 mins pleasant stroll of 6km or so.
Hotel in the middle of a very upmarket residential area , close to University Hospital, and facing an old market . Very few bars and restaurants nearby so ate evening meal in hotel and very good. Bar prices cheap.
In all, this is a very nice hotel. Don't be put off by the distance from the centre .

the hotel is outside the town center, but there is a tram just behind the hotel and it runs frequently through the train station and shopping center, very convenient. the hotel is located in a pleasant area of old style houses, there's a market just outside on the weekends. breakfast and coffee were great, food in the restaurant were excellent, staff were super friendly, room was spacious and clean, can't say enough good things about this hotel.

The Margarethenhohe is situated in a lovely square at the heart of this peaceful oasis just outside Essen. The architect Georg Metzendorf linked the idea of social housing with romantically-styled façades at the request of philanthropist Margarethe Krupp. History aside, the hotel is excellent. It has a comfortable, light, modern interior and ticks all the boxes. Margarethe Krupp's own panelled room has been preserved on the first floor. The food is excellent, there is a nice bar and the staff are polite and helpful. Thoroughly recommended.

It's just perfect from every thing. Really nice and clean place, super modern, really nice stuff and food is incredible at an excellent price. We Went there for four days and we loved every moment of it. This year we went back for a nice dinner as we couldn't stay overnight and planning to go back :)
