“Very nice, but 5 stars??”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 18, 2012

Located outside of the very city, but close to opera house, concert hall, Folkwang Museum. I got a room with a nice view on the park. Everything is fine, except the insufficient isolation against noise from the neighbour room... I was in a room with a (locked) door to the neighbour room which let every noise through and thus I had to participate at the neighbour's TV evening till after midnight .....

Dear wolfgang s,
Thank you for taking time for giving us feedback on tripadvisor.

I am happy to hear that you found the location of the Sheraton Essen Hotel to be convenient and enjoyed the park-view of your room.

Unfortunately you have been disturbed by the room located next to yours due to the fact that you have stayed in a room with a connecting door. We are very sorry for that!
Please be informed that we are happy to arrange a change of room during your stay if we have the availability.
Just let us know if there is a problem during your stay already, so we are able to take care of it, to make your stay pleasant.

The Team of Sheraton Essen Hotel wishes you a merry Christmas and all the best for 2013!

Kind regards,

Katrin Kitel-Tompoulidou

I stayed in this hotel on two occasions in December. The experience was just OK. This is an average hotel, definitely not a 5 star. Most of the other Sheraton hotels I have stayed in have been superior. However, being in Essen, I did not expect much. The hotel is within short walking distance from the train station and main pedestrianized shopping area. The city is beautiful around Christmas, with the markets and decorations. Like others have said, the rooms are quite dated. The internet service is quite poor and frustrating. It would be much more convenient to have wi-fi service, than the current cable system. The TV selection is really lacking. There is only a handful of English channels, none of which you would call “entertaining” The movie selection is a joke. It is almost amusing to scan through the horrible limited selection of films. The gym is very small. Could hardly be considered a gym, but works for your basic needs. I wish that there was also a good selection of free weights and a little more space. The spa section with the saunas is quite nice and relaxing after a hard days work. There is also a park right outside the back door, which is nice for a jog or stroll. Overall OK experience. Nothing special.

Dear alspeece,

Thank you for spending some of your precious time on reviewing our hotel on tripadvisor.

It is a pity that your stay at Sheraton Essen Hotel has not been special for you as we always try to provide excellent service to our guests.

Unfortunately we are not able to provide a bigger gym as we do not possess the facilities. However we are happy to hear that you made use of our direct access to the park in order to get some fresh air and motion.

Further I would like to let you know that we forwarded your concerns about the internet connection to our IT team to find a proper solution to resolve the problem. Please be informed that we are already planning to renovate our rooms in the future.

We hope that even though not everything worked out perfectly for you, you had a nice stay at Essen and would consider staying with us as again in the future.

The Team of Sheraton Essen Hotel wishes you a merry Christmas and all the best for 2013.

Kind regards,

Katrin Kitel-Tompoulidou

I stayed at the Sheraton whilst working in Essen. I could find no faults with the hotel. The attention to detail was evident from the spotless cleaning to the faultless service. The room was large with space for a sofa, armchair and coffee table. Large bathroom, wardrobe and safe. Well equipped mini bar. Great choice at breakfast. I didn't have time to use the spa or fitness centre but I am sure they too would be of a great standard. The hotel is also on the edge of a park so you can jog starlight out of the back door. The central location is just a 5 minute walk from Essen train station. Everything was as it should be in a 5 star chain hotel. Pay Wi-Fi in rooms which these days is not good although free Wi-Fi was available in the foyers.
I was told that Nicole Kidman was staying there at the same time, whilst filming. If it is good enough for her it is certainly good enough for me.

Dear Simon,

Thank you very much for your feedback given on your previous travel experience with us. We are glad to see that you had an enjoyable time at the Sheraton Essen Hotel. Wi-Fi in-room is currently provided by an outside vendor and that is the reason why we cannot offer this service free of charge.

We hope you will stay with us again.

I stayed here for a show at the exhibition halls and wasn't disappointed. The room had everything you could need for a business trip and was serviced every day. The staff on reception were always very helpful with taxi's, restaurant bookings and keeping a parcel for me. We used the hotel bar a fair bit and Suzie was fab too!
Breakfast was ok, the hot food seemed to be running out everyday when I'd get there at 7.30, but maybe this was my timing!
The hotel could really do with offering free wifi in the rooms as most places seem to offer this now. That being said I did manage to use the business centre downstairs which worked well and there's free wifi there in reception.

Dear Buffyno52,

It is great to read you had a good time in Essen and more importantly, that our team was able to grant a enjoyable stay while your travel plans brought you to an exhibition.

We will certainly check with our restaurant team on the timing for the food preparation to serve all hot dishes during our breakfast hours properly.

As far as wi-fi service concern we currently do work out a new way to provide Internet services. Due to our contractual situation we cannot grant free wi-fi in the hotel.

We hope to welcoming you back soon.

Kind regards,

Katrin Kitel-Tompoulidou

Stayed here for there nights.
Hotel has a very good atmosphere, lounge is very good and all the staff I dealt with were friendly and efficient.

There is a bar, which whilst I was there was busy and also had a very good atmosphere, not like the usual bland hotel bar.

However, no wifi in bedrooms. There is a wired connection but as I use a MacBook Air, it was useless to me. I had to use an outside provider for wifi access in my room. 19 euros for 600 minutes.

The room itself is very dated, in good condition but very 1983. No sweet sleeper beds in this hotel
Aslo, I was staying there for a fair in Dusseldorf. Lots of people were. It is a 65-70 euro taxi ride to the fair, each way

Dear Rich2809,

Thank you for taking the time letting us know about your previous travel experience.

It is true that we currently do not have the most up-to-date version of the well known Sheraton Sweet Sleeper beds. However, we are in our last preparation and will do upgrade our rooms with brand new Sheraton Sweet Sleeper beds starting December 2012 followed by new bathrooms in 2013. Also, a very important note: we will change our Internet provider as of January 2013. Currently, we need to take advantage of t-mobile services to provide wi-fi access. This will change accordingly.

As far as taxi costs are involved we have no chance to support in negotiating. However, there is a train bringing you over to Dusseldorf for EUR 8 and vice versa.

We hope you had a successful time at the Dusseldorf fair. Next time you travel to our area we can provide you with new facilities and services.

We look very much forward to welcoming you back soon.

Kind regards,

Katrin Kitel-Tompoulidou

Two days in the Sheraton Essen. Friendly people, large rooms. The decor of the entire place is kind of stuck in the sixties but kept really well with almost no signs of wear and tear. The gym needs an urgent upgrade, the sauna is very good and breakfast is fine.
The only drawback maybe is that on the same floor I stood they have smoking and non smoking rooms. The entire hallway smells of stale cigarette. Could be bothersome, but one can live with it. Maybe they want to concentrate smoking rooms on just one floor.
And they really should upgrade the gym!!

Room Tip: Try to get a room that looks out over the park. Makes you feel almost like being in the countryside...

Dear fritzmoedinger,

We appreciate your feedback on your previous stay with us. We undertand that you were satisfied with your travel experience, but unfortunately, had to stay at one of our non-refurbished rooms. We are in the current process to run last preparations before start implementing our new "Sheraton Sweet Sleeper" bedding followed by refurbishments in our bathrooms planned for 2013.

In this regard, we do certainly consider smoking/non-smoking configuration to suite guests' expactations.

We understand our gym facility did not meet your expactations as it is limited in size. Due to our building structure it will be uncertain to change the size and location.

We look very much forward to welcoming you back soon.

Always safe travels.

Arrived with approx. 20 colleagues but the check-in took each of us about 3 mins. – well done! The general first impression was good, the lobby area well maintained, leading to high stools bar, then the restaurant with a beautiful garden. Elevators work on a key – little tip for the ones who like I will “just want to get upstairs” and will be pushing the buttons with no luck before realizing this.

My bedroom was dated, with a very low bed, bathroom rather old looking, though all amenities working fine; overall the room was clean & had all I needed for the 1 night stay.

With a few others we went for pre-dinner drinks and the lady at the bar was amazing! Made us feel right at home being friendly and on the ball. We had dinner at the main restaurant – cozy space, staff was attentive, our food was tasty & arrived fast. There’s a pond in the middle of the garden just outside the restaurant too!

The hotel does turndown service – a nice surprise when you return to your room after a whole day.

Breakfast was good – quite a nice selection of cereals, meats, cheeses, fruit etc. and staff was attentive. Check-out was smooth.

Overall: the hotel was fine for one night but I believe some work on updating the bedrooms should be done. Downstairs is done up nice already and the bedrooms should be on the same level.
