“a quiet, clean, small value hotel”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

Very good rating for what it is....a small hotel near the old city center, it is easy to walk to the train station and to shopping. A typical breakfast has familiar options for a 'value' hotel. The rooms are smallish but adequate, especially if traveling alone. It was clean and the staff helpful. Would I repeat? Yes on those occasions when I want an inexpensive place to stay.

Nothing special about this place, you get what you pay for. The breakfast is a typical German breakfast you get in all hotels - bread, lunchmeat, cheese and müsli. It was located close enough to the central station to walk to. I see no reason why I would not book this one on my next visit, too.

Arrived after 9.00 so unfortunately the restaurant and bar were closed. Room was ok cannot fault how clean it was but it was very cold, even with heating turned up full. Breakfast was typical continental, staff were very friendly and helpful.

I was looking for the good value for money hotel in Essen, as I was going to visit the Messe for a few days (Exhibition Center Essen). My wish list was short - something with the breakfast included in the reasonable price of the night (below 60 euro), relatively central and easy to use by public transport, WLan free and when possible Reception open for the longer hours (as I planned to arrive late in the night, while traveling to Essen).

Hotel Korn was on the description falling in all those categories with 3 stars and price around 50 euro a night - you would not want anything more.

Well the results was almost as expected, yet not exceeding any of the expectations, which is fare taking into account the price.

There are positive moments of the hotel:

1. Hotel staff is freindly and ready to help - due to some private reasons I had to cut the stay - on the phone I manage to agree it with reception with no problems.

2. Hotel is indeed central and an undeground station with train every 10 minutes to Exhibition hall Essen is just stone throw away. There is a SIXT Rent Auto station ca 3 minutes away and huge shopping center accross the road from the hotel - very practical.

3. Entrance with the wheel chair or lots of baggage is not an issue both to the Hotel and inside of the hotel

4. You have free and well functioning W Lan in your room (you need to get a new tcket from the reception every 24 hours)

5. You may stay with your dog there (I was not with mine, yet the topic is getting more and more intense for me I am getting an info about the traveling with my dog!!!). That is worth and extra plus overall

6. Great bed - one of my best slip in the hotels so far. The room was for sure single, yet the bed was double king size!!

Something I am not really inspired about in Hotel Jorn Essen:

1. The breakfast was rather dull - OK for the price - yet everything was out at the time I was down for breakfast

2. My room (yet named Comfort room) was very small, that includes the room, the shower and the WC. Also the room was a kind of behind the stairs part of the hotel - so was a bit dark in the corridor too

3. Window has the Currtain which do not work, as there are also so called ROman curtains behind the window (rolleten), yet I discovered that a day I left.

4. Parking mentioned in the hotel description was always full and no way to park the car there - so you need to consider this when coming with your car!!!

Overall - the feeling was rather simple - it is OK to stay in the room I was for a night or two - longer you are risking to get a claustrophobia feeling, overall room was nothing special, yet apart from the size also nothing to complaint about.

I would recomend to saty in the hotel for anyone with similar goals - to be in Essen for a day or two, not looking for something special for your slip and it makes sense to book by the site of the hotel in the internet, while you have some discount there too.

Room Tip: Book with the hotel internet site and be aware when coming with a car - could be parking problems

I have stayed at this family hotel on many previous occasions. It is friendly and good value. The only negative criticism I would make is that the restaurant menu is extremely limited and has not changed for years - of course you can always go out to another restaurant, to eat at night but I am always too tired to be bothered! No toiletries in the bathroom, except horrible canister liquid soap, so don't forget to pack everything!

I've been visiting Essen for an annual trade fair since 2001 and stayed here many times. If you're looking for an excellent value hotel with a nice little restaurant and a helpful front desk in a quiet location then Hotel Korn is a very good choice. The rooms are smallish and they are not overly plush but they are decent.

I stay in 5 and 6 star hotels for my work travel (Ritz Carltons, Grand Hyatts, Mandarins, Shangri La's etc) which are very comfortable and good for business. They can also be rather charmless and are super expensive. This doesn't stop me loving the little Hotel Korn which, at 73 euros per night including breakfast, is lovely and quiet yet only 5 mins walk from the city centre.

So, highly recommended - just booked by next trip there.
