Before going on this trip, my main concern with this hotel based on reviews I read on here was that the room would be too small. It wasn't -- it was perfectly fine for two people. Some of the hotel was a bit Spartan, even more than I'd expect from a budget hotel. Some signs were lopsided, and the walls in the hallways resembled caves. But the lobby and the room were fine. Service was very friendly.

Location was good -- close to the Hauptbahnhof, but the surrounding area felt safe.

The rate we reserved included free breakfast, which had a decent selection and good quality. The free lobby wifi worked in our room, which was awesome.

We couldn't get the air conditioning to work in our room (maybe they disable it in October?), so it was somewhat warm in our room one or two nights (and opening the windows isn't a great option if you're facing the train station). But other than that, everything was comfortable.

Heading out to Essen with a bunch of friends, we were going to a convention at Messe Essen so for us, convenience was key and Ibis did not disappoint on that front.

The hotel is a very short walk to Essen Hbf which was great, as having arrived to Dusseldorf airport and then taking the train to Essen, we wanted to get the the hotel as soon as possible. Around the train station are lots of bakeries and quick eats so for people who wanted to eat out, it was very easy and quick. €10 for breakfast was a little pricey as you can definitely get a cheaper breakfast out but again it meant you didn't need to leave the hotel. I did get the bed and breakfast option and it was absolutely fine - mainly a continental style cold breakfast buffet. The restaurant has a very limited menu - mainly pizza and bagettes but again, you are close enough to shops and supermarkets to get something to eat outside.

The rooms are particularly small (and I mean VERY small) but clean, warm and fairly modern.

The free wifi only officially works in the lobby and when you are in your rooms you can purchase hourly or daily wifi. I wouldn't depend on the free wifi however if you have something important to send out - it is temperamental.

I would recommend the Ibis for a short stay and will probably stay there again next year!

Room Tip: Higher the better for reduced traffic noises

Small but comfortable room and bathroom, clean, WIFI worked better in the reception area but it worked. Location was very convenient for going shopping/eating and not far by car to Messe which made my life much easier.

Room Tip: non smoking rooms

First off, this hotel is located in quite a run down part of Essen. The reception area is quite promising, open and fairly modern....it ends there! The lift is tiny...which builds you up nicely for the rooms. However prior to that you will notice the décor, the corridors look as if someone has sprayed popcorn all over the walls and painted it..no kidding! The carpets are tired, stained and worn.

The rooms defies belief, a wardrobe or rather lot behind some wood, has enough space for 4 t-shirts and a pair of jeans (no exaggeration). There is no space in the room for your suitcase, no mini bar or even bedside cabinets or draws. The bathroom has a corner shower which you have to enter sideways, this butts up against the sink which butts up against the toilet which is angled to create more space but most average people would struggle to sit on it. Did I mention that you cant get dried in the bathroom, its too small. A

All the back rooms back onto the main railway line which is very noisy and an eyesore, the rooms have no AC and no room service, both of which they advertise. Breakfast is reasonable and in nice surroundings. There is no other meal service and you are not allowed to consume other food unless in your room. The bar offers only 2 kinds of beer, and not very good beer at that. The wine is truly appalling!

All in all, along with the miserable staff, expensive wi-fi that doesnt work, no English TV channels apart from the news...a truly dreadful experience...avoid!

Room Tip: Keep on driving!

Dear NightBreed01,

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience at the Ibis Essen. I am sorry that your experience did not meet your expectations; please allow me to express my sincerest apologies.

At Ibis, we strive to provide a superior service experience for every customer; therefore your feedback is very important to us. We are glad that our breakfast fulfilled your expectations. With our last renovation (finished February 2012), we tried to get the maximum out off the structural circumstances. The ibis hotel as a two star product has of course neither room service nor a mini bar. But beside of this we offer a 24h Snack and drink service at our bar.

We appreciate your sharing your concerns, and it is our hope that you will give us the opportunity to better serve you in the near future.

Sincerely,

Iris Lenzner
