“A little above average but below very good...”
Reviewed January 23, 2014 via mobile

Super spot in the heart of the old town tourist area. The interior is warm and cozy with tables packed in so that when the place is busy, which it certainly was when I visited, there is a party atmosphere. Throw in a little live music and it can get pretty noisy! If you want quiet and romantic, this might not be the place.

However, the food is good... I ate the mixed fish and had six different species of seafood, with spinach and boiled potatoes. Simply prepared, generous portion, cooked perfectly with the snapper just beyond translucent.

Excellent coffee and professional service.

“Unspectacular”
Reviewed December 28, 2013 via mobile

The El Gitano is located in a petite side alley. There is various spanish restaurants here to pick from. We were looking for some Tapas but the El Gitano has very little choice. Instead, they have a wide assortment of uninspired regular fish and meat main dishes. I had lamb with spinach in a pepper sauce. My wife had a filet steak with fries. Our friends shared a paella. All meals were okayish, but nothing to get exciting about. The waiters have been friendly, despite the place being packed. We got a port wine, bread and dipps for free and paid about 45 Euros per person for starter, main dish, dessert and drinks. Nevertheless, the experience was unspectacular and we would rather try out the other restaurants around next time.

“Just OK”
Reviewed November 22, 2013

The restaurant is warm and welcoming. They start by offering a free glass of dry sherry which while well intentioned smelled and tasted like old cork. The food selection is beyond extensive and the menus are available in English. The portions are generous but the quality and preparation is not what you would expect. For example, the onion soup is just that, onion soup, no cheese and the mixed grill fish platter while exceedingly large included one poorly cooked shrimp and a piece of fish that was not that fresh. The champignons in a garlic sauce were tasty but slightly uncooked.
The most disappointing and annoying happening was the waiter’s insistence for a tip. In Germany, like in most European countries, the tip is included in the bill. However, most patrons will reward good service and depending on the number of guests, will add a small additional monetary reward. Many establishments leave a "Tip" line on their bill and most guests from countries other than Europe unknowingly add another full tip.

On the same street with this eatery there are at least three more Spanish restaurants with very similar if not identical menus so, next time I will try my luck elsewhere.

“Spanish specialties and Argentinian steaks”
Reviewed June 20, 2013

This restaurant features Spanish specialties and Argentinian steaks. The place was packed on a Saturday afternoon, and we felt lucky to find on open table. We enjoyed their house wine, as well as their gaspacho, grilled fish, and two servings of grilled calamari. We found verything very much to our liking.

“Great steaks and warm welcome.”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

We didn't plan on eating Spanish food in Germany but the place looked so welcoming we just went in and had a great evening. We were given sherry, bread and dips to start with, the waiters couldn't do enough for you, the food was top quality, melt-in-the-mouth steaks and delicious stroganoff. Decor quite weird, but atmospheric. Recommended.
