This excellent hotel well deserves the accolade for best hotel in Dusseldorf - it is!
Six of us stayed for three nights in three double rooms to enjoy the Christmas Markets. The location is nice and quiet and the walk to the Alt Stadt and the markets take only a few minutes.
Go to Pssst... Bandido! at the end of the road - superb Mexican food well worth splash-out.
We had a free bar in the lobby with Coke, Konig Pils, Frankenheimer Alt or mineral water; plus there was free mineral water in the room. The coffee machine needs a PhD to work as the instructions are in German. Ask for tea and they wuill provide it.
The rooms and bathrooms are spotlessly clean as is the rest of this hotel. There is free WiFi with a humungous access code that works in every room, plus a PC with broadband and a printer attached in the corridor - useful to print your boarding cards.
The staff could not have been more helpful, storing our luggage, arranging a large taxi and being genuinely charming throughout our stay.
The buffet breakfast is very fresh even if the choice is small and you can ask for an egg if you want one.
If there was a six * category above "Excellent" then Max Garni deserves it - just superb and great value for money.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are quiter than those at the front but even these are by no means noisy as there i...

Stayed here as a family of 5 in three rooms and it was perfect.
We arrived after 9.00pm and our keys were in the safe as promised by Petra. Our rooms were all clean, warm and well supplied with everything from bottled water, a coffee machine, hair dryer, there was even an umbrella.
We all thought the breakfast was great, there were rolls, croissants, fresh fruit salad, cereals, meat, cheese and scrambled eggs, fresh coffee and a pot of tea, excellent value for 7.50 euros.
The hotel was well situated for everything we wanted to do and it was great to get back in the evening and have a quiet drink together in the little lounge area. Even more of a bonus that the drinks were included in the price of the hotel.
We used the travel cards that we were given on the trams the U bahn and the train back to the airport with no problem whatsover, a real saving if you are planning to use public transport while you are in Dusseldorf.
Reading some of the previous reviews I was a bit worried that we were going to be in the middle of the red light area but we certainly didn't notice anything untoward during our stay there.
If you want a comfortable, reasonable priced well sited hotel to stay in then this is the place to be.

Room Tip: We had rooms 19, 20 and 14. room 14 had a triple bed in it. Room 20 overlooked the rear of the hotel...

We visited the Hotel Garni for 3 nights on 2nd December 2012 and arrived just after 1900 after notifying them that this would be our arrival time. The hotel door was locked and after ringing the bell several times we noticed a metal box on the wall. Inside this was a key safe with a note on it giving our room numbers. This key safe required a combination to open it which we did not have. Fortunately we had a mobile phone and we were able to phone the hotel for instructions. Two days after arriving home I received an e mail informing about the keys being in the safe and giving the combination (a bit late).
The room was clean and fairly spacious with a complimentary bottle of water and sweets on the pillows.
Breakfast on the first morning was a bit disappointing with only meat, cheese and bread with no cereals or fruit available and only a cup of tea served instead of a pot. Two of us asked for boiled eggs but only one arrived and at the end of breakfast an apology saying she had just found the other egg. The second morning was much better with a different person who had laid out cereals fruit and yoghurt and served a pot of tea without being asked. Serving on the third morning was the girl of the first morning and whilst on this occasion she had laid out cereals and fruit we still had to ask for a pot of tea and the table was only laid for 2 with the 3rd place being laid separately on a separate table.
Whilst the breakfast was adequate and of good quality we felt it was a bit overpriced. The constant availability of free beer and coffee were a nice touch but could be abused by some but maybe if these were restricted the savings could be used to reduce the price of the breakfast.
Overall we had a very nice stay and the staff were pleasant and helpful and would return if in Dusseldorf.

Hello Donboy,

I´m sorry about the trouble with the check in. I send you the e-mail on the 30th of november in the morning with the information, that the reception is closed after 6pm at the weekend.
I'm really sad that our breakfast was not satisfy for you. But I would not say that € 7.50 per person are overpriced. I´m sorry that you feel that way.

Wonderful X-Mas time for you and your family.

Petra

I'm a business traveller, with a decent budget. None the less, I always choose here first because it's a clean, friendly, personal hotel with a great small team running it. It's exceptional value. One day, I will try the free beer :) But mostly I just use it as a base to visit some companies.

My advice? Do it!

Really super hotel. Rooms are clean, bright and comfortable. We had one overlooking the courtyard at the rear so with blinds open you can look right into other apartments and small offices. Blinds allow for modesty though! And when i say warm, that relates to both the welcome and the rooms. Radiators are adjustable but on a cold day it can be toasty inside. Breakfast is fresh and simple with eggs on the side if you wish. Coffee machine provides a lovely cappuccino with free beers and soft drinks available too. One small gripe which is lack of soundproofing - sounded like people above us were doing DIY for a couple of days.

Location is very good - a few minutes from the Ko (which is divine - take those credit cards), the train station and comfortable walking distance to Hofgarten, Altstadt and the Rhine promenade. Lots of restaurants and bars nearby also. Dusseldorf is a remarkably lovely city and this hotel is one of the gems.

What a nice place to stay. Everything that can be said has been. I have stayed at far worse 4 star hotels. Very highly recommend. If only other hotels could find the balance, personal but functional, clean and pleasant. Also a very nice lady working there only too pleased to help. Wonderful.
