Hotel am Rathaus (don't know why it is called 'El Rancho' in Tripadvisor?) is a small cosy hotel in the middle of Altstadt. Reception is not open during the night, so you keep the room key to let yourself in to the building at late hours.
I had room 6 on the fourth floor (note: no elevator!), a small single room with an even smaller hallway. The bathroom (with a shower cabin) was tiny, but adequate. There was a nice view from the windows, and the bed, although small, was very comfy.
Breakfast is served in a home-kitchen-like room and have a good assortment of everything you would expect. however, one morning both the breakfast room and the reception was totally empty, so (a bit confused) I bought something on the street instead.
When returning later during the day the owner was devastated and expressed his sincere apologies. It turned out that there had been a big traffic accident during the morning rush, and he was caught in the traffic jam and arrived too late to the hotel. He offered me a good bottle of wine for the evening, and again expressed how sorry he was.
Despite the mishap with the breakfast I think the hotel and the location is lovely, and I will try to stay there again when I go to Düsseldorf the next time. The free WiFi (with good speed) made working and surfing easy as well.
