“Would be a great hotel if they offered free internet”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 27, 2011

The hotel was clean and very nice. Staff did not crack a smile the whole time I was there they felt very unapproachable. The rooms were really clean and well maintained, same goes for the hotel overall. Overall a decent value for a night's stay considering the location and the perks. Now comes the cons. First of all the Swisscom internet connection which they offer is an overpriced joke. Whenever I see this paid internet connection I lose all respect for a hotel and their business model. This is an outdated model that no longer suits the needs of a modern business and casual traveler. If Motel 6 can offer free WiFi I think at this point even a larger hotel chain NH can too. Almost every small or large hotel these days offers a standard wireless connection already built into the price of the stay or as a standard feature. The only places where I find this somewhat of a luxury is vacation resorts and that's really the only place I can see this still being a separate service. This hotel is not a resort. The internet is slow and insanely expensive for the service it offers. It also does not give you many options to choose from so they can squeeze every penny possible. Second negative was the price of breakfast. It does have variety but not enough to be 20 Euros. Only eat it if its already built into your price or if you are in a hurry there is a bakery right across the street which can give you a decent breakfast for a fraction of the cost and better quality.

Room Tip: Not many impressive views of Dusseldorf so it really doesn't matter they all let a lot of light...

Superb central location, quietly nestled overlooking the Galeria Kaufhof, sleek simple modern rooms, superb beds and cleanliness. Offered 25€ for upgrade. Wonderful hotel .

A newly rennovated building over five floors. Modern public areas and well rennovated modern rooms with simple but very clean facilities. My room was small but well decorated with built in furniture. The bathroom was especially good but only a shower. Fine for a night or two but the room was too small to spend an evening in. Although there is a pleasant bar there is no restaurant in the hotel which is not a problem as there are a number nearby but it means you have to go out. The hotel gives you a free pass to the nearby Fitness First gym if you ask which is very good. The hotel is just off the end of Konigsalle which is the main shopping street and about a 20 minute walk from the old town, media harbour or main station.

Short trip for 2 nights. Ive been on a few business trips and this hotel is very much like a business based hotel. Typical nononse, basic and standard hotel.

Checkin
Receptionist did take a while; even though it wasnt busy.

Room
Room was smallish but very modern and clean. But what did freak me out a bit was the corridors were like prison walls. Very dark and daunting corridors.

Breakfast limited selection

Food.
Doesnt have a selection at all. I order pepsi and a Pizza. But I was told it would take 45 mins. I didnt bother; went to a local resturant instead.

Overall.
Average hotel for business users who spend more time in the office than the hotel. Wouldnt take the family there.

Room Tip: Try getting a business rate. (A bit obvious)

I stayed here unexpectedly for 2 nights when my chosen hotel fell through (there was no one at the reception after 6 pm on weekends). Although I had no reservation, the front desk staff cheerfully checked me in and gave me a single room for about $156 per night including breakfast. The room was quite modern but basic, with a small TV and small bathroom with shower stall (that was hard to get in and out of due to the positioning of the door). The lack of AC was not a problem since I could leave the window open for the cool night breeze. It's not a far walk from the train station and convenient to the Steinstrasse/Konigsallee subway stop. One can easily walk from the hotel to the smart shops on Konigsallee, and there are several attractive restaurants in the vicinity. The "Old Town" was a bit farther to walk to, but still not too bad. The internet was available only through a company that you have to sign up for on-line with a credit card, which was inconvenient. There was only one elevator, which was also inconvenient. Breakfast was very good, although there were no eggs cooked to order. Probably the best part of the stay was the cheery staff at the front desk, who were very helpful. Overall, I'd say it was a good option in this expensive city.

This hotel is pretty much what you expect from NH. Modern decor and simple but functional rooms. I am usually a massive NH hotel but this one left me a little disappointed.

This hotel is well located for exploring the city, 5 minutes to Könnigsallee, 10 minutes to the Altstadt and 10 minutes to the train station.

Breakfast was €20 which we decided not to have, there are many coffee shops to grab some breakfast located nearby for a fraction of the price. The staff were friendly and helpful and free wifi is available in the lobby area.

When we checked in we were given a room on the 3rd floor, the room was located at the front of the hotel. It was warm in the room but there was no AC, only a mobile unit which needed to be vented out of the window. This was obviously very noisy. We asked to be moved and were told that only the fifth floor has AC. Despite the hotel being seemingly empty throughout our entire stay we were told the only other room they would give us was a very small smoking room on the fifth floor. I took the smoky smell over the traffic noise but felt very disappointed. The room was a tight squeeze for two people with two cases for three nights and was more like a single room.

By far the worst part of our stay was the pillows, it felt like sleeping on a bag of old cotton wool balls. The replacement pillows we received were exactly the same and were possibly the worst hotel pillows i have ever seen. (Yes, they were even worse than Ibis pillows)

Overall this place offers good value for money in a good location but unless they fix the AC and purchase some new pillows i won't be staying again.

Quick summary: to have a really comfortable room, you want the fifth (top) floor of this hotel. Quick walk to old town, Konisghalle, the river, museums, etc.

We were in Dusseldorf on business, and the location was suggested for easy driving access to the company's offices, yet still offer a good location for dinner options, tourism, etc.

One thing to know about NH Hotels: this company seems to buy older properties and renovates them to modern standards for a good business class hotel. Since we've stayed at more than one NH, we've learned to ask about upgrade options and checked a few out. Here, you really want the upgrade to the fifth floor, which was added to this (1960's? era) building and has more modern infractructure than the lower floors.

The comparison: the first room we were shown on the third floor (#321, shower only) initially looked nice with its corner location surrounded by windows and sleek modern decor. However, the renovation did not include redoing the existing heating and AC and heating system!! Instead of installing a proper central air system, there was a Rube Goldberg-like floor-standing AC machine that required that you to vent a big tube (approx 12" diameter) that circulated the hot air out the window (!!!) For cooler months, there was a floor-standing heating unit. Besides making the room feel more cluttered, this reminds me more of a student's garret than a modern business class hotel room. From what I can tell, all the rooms in the original 4-story building have this system. It was only the added 5th floor rooms that have modern central heat and AC systems. There is such a thing as too cheap a renovation.

We also saw room #511, which is a very large 2-room suite, with a dining table and seating area. Frankly, we decided not to go that grand, but it's a nice suite if you want that kind of space an amenities.

We upgraded to Room #509 on the fifth floor room, which was pretty comfortable -- spacious, with a comfortable king-sized bed. The decor is modern, with neutral colors and hardwood floors. Good-size work desk. Robes and slippers.

I don't know if there are non-smoking rooms. We had a smoking room, but the ventilation was excellent -- no smoke smell except for an incident described below.

Excellent housekeeping. The staff at the check-in desk are friendly, helpful, and professional.

There is free wifi in the lounge, using security codes with 30-minute increments. While kind of slow, this works well enough unless you are in the middle of something when the time runs out. The internet works better if you purchase the 24-hour option in your room.

In-room safe and minibar.

While the room is comfortable enough, there are a few annoying characteristics that I attribute to a concern for design over function (e.g. the phone that is not at all intuitive to work), or show pretty good design on the cheap. For the latter, the night stands are mere slabs of wood, where you'd really like a little drawer for the odds-and-ends of life. The good-sized closet has no doors, which means that all your clothing and stuff are open to view by the cleaning staff, and just looks messy.

I'm also not a fan of the hotel trend toward duvets on the bed rather than sheets and blankets. The duvets are always too warm, even when you crank up the AC. (Have managers noticed an increase in AC bills when they use duvets?) I can more easily adjust the comfort level of separate sheets and blankets.

The bathroom is pretty good, but frosted glass doors which are annoying when one person gets up at night and floods the bedroom with light. Do I really need a vision of what is going on in the bathroom?

There are nice lounges on the ground floor for the bar, a quick snack, just hanging out, etc.

There is an excellent and extensive buffet breakfast (19 euros) in the breakfast room of fruits and juices, breads and pastries, meats, cheeses, salmon, cereals, etc. and etc. Pricey but worth it.

I would consider staying here again on the fifth floor, but the management should polish the procedures of some service staff. The kicker was when we returned to our room one Sunday afternoon after touring, to a definite smell of cigarette smoke. Yes, we had a smoking room, but we had been there a few days with no noticeable smoke odor. This day, it was unmistable, and the only explanation could be that the cleaning staff took a smoking break in our room. We complained, and the incident did not occur again.

Other incidents: we had to sign for the delivery of our laundry, but the maid did not have a pen on her -- she asked us for one! Other: the ONE elevator is rather small. When guests tried to get on, one maid witha big cleaning truck decided she had priority on the elevator. Usefully, a manager was nearby and immediately instructed her that guests should be given preference for the small space. That manager seemed very professional and I'm sure took note of procedures that should be reviewed in the future.

While the location is a short walk to many attractions of Dusseldorf, there are a few good restaurants around the corner from the hotel. Lampada (Italian) has a very accomodating staff. There is also a good Turkish restaurant next door, whose name escapes me.

Room Tip: The fifth floor is the only floor I'd stay on.
