Located further from the city than it appears on the map - a lengthy walk. But there is a tram stop outside. Good, friendly restaurant open until 1am - great! Reception are rather hard work, and they still charge for wi-fi. When I questioned this I was told it was a lot more expensive in New York - which isn't really the point! Rooms are a bit bare and hot. Good but expensive car park.

Date : 27/12/2012
Location : Mercure Hotel “Am Seestern”
Room number : 325
Price : 33€/person – breakfast inclusive (Flair Magazine promotion)

Summary : score : 3,5/5
Convenient modern style hotel, which can be rated 4 stars (european rating)¹. The hotel is located near the city ring (not centre), in between company buildings. The hotel is mainly focussed on overnight stay of business people related to surrounding companies. The price/quality ratio is tending towards the expensive side, certainly for the breakfast. It is a convenient hotel for overnight stay under promotion conditions, with nearby public transport to commute to city centre.

Details :

Environment : score : 4/5
• Located 5 km from City Center (Altstadt)
• In between company buildings (mainly telecom) :
o Limited resto and bars around.
• Public transport (tram) nearby (500 m)
o Lines 74 and 76 to center.
o Cost of ticket : 2.50 €/adult (1h validity for line change)
o Approximate 20 mins to reach city center/shopping center (Königsallee).
• Very well reachable by car.

Outside : score : 3/5
• Outside of the hotel is very clean.
• When arriving by car, entrance to hotel is self-explanatory (however, no direction indication to hotel entrance was noticed. Might confuse elderly people).
• No taxi parking is noticed. No taxi is waiting in front of hotel. Hotel will arrange taxi on request.
• Confusion if you can park your car in front of hotel for unloading luggage (no painted indications). A footpath and bicycle path have to be crossed to put your car in front of the hotel.

Reception : score : 3/5
• Service :
o Somewhat arrogant but professional (night of arrival).
o Very good (day of departure).
• Explanations :
o Received the key to our room, with clear indications how to reach it.
o Received city map, and indication on public transport usage, but no explanation where the tram stop was (explains the “somewhat arrogant” rating).
• Speed : No needless waiting time. Quickly served at all times.

Parking : score : 4/5
• Located under the hotel.
• Closed off by entrance doorway and lever.
• Need to take ticket and pay at reception when leaving, cost 15€/24h.
• Parking was very clean.
• Parking spots are sufficiently big to park normal European family car.
• No problem finding a parking spot, but doubts if there is sufficient space in full-season.
• Entrance from parking to hotel and access to elevators is secured.

Elevators : score : 5/5
• 2 Elevators with modern hotel quality degree.
• Secured when you want to go up from reception or parking.
• Elevators are very clean.
• Elevators are very silent, inside as well as outside when waiting.

Corridors : score : 4/5
• Covered by full carpet limiting footnoise.
• No marble or stone risking echo of noise.
• Very clean.
• In neighbourhood of our room some noisy airco (noise does not penetrate in the room).

Room : score : 4/5
Room : double.
• Electronic entrance via room card.
• Electronic lightning triggered via room card.
• Very clean.
• Full carpet covered floors.
• Located at the front of the hotel, facing street and bridge towards city ring.
• Insulation :
o Window : Traffic noise only penetrates faintly into the room (remark : was calm period of year in this area, for traffic).
o Door/Walls :
 Corridor noise only penetrates faintly into the room.
 Next Rooms noise only penetrates faintly into the room.

• Convenient television with sufficiently big screen.
• Connection to LAN with cable (not used : paying ?)
• Small paper notepad with stylo available.
• Extra chair+table.
• Standing light + light next to the bed. (Room key is trigger to operate).
• Room service available.

Bathroom :
• Bath-shower combination.
• Batch sufficiently big for 1m70 person.
• Separate sink with large mirror and hairdryer.
• Tiles in bathroom slightly outdated compared to rest and status of hotel.
• Showergel, other soaps and hairnet available.

Breakfast : score : 3/5

• Large choice in types of bread.
• Warm (eggs, bacon,…) and cold different types of salami, ham, cheese available.

• Orange juice, milk, etc. available.
• Different types of tea, hot coco, coffee available.
• Personnel is very friendly.
• Different newspapers available, but mainly German. Very few international (English only) newspapers.

Breakfast was included in the overnight stay. If not, price/quality ratio is not so good (too expensive for what you get).

Fitness : score : 5/5
• Presence of Bicycle, Running, Handbike, and Langlauf exercise equipment of professional (Techogym) standards.
If you have a personal heart rate chest belt and similar exercise equipment in your own local gym, you can bring your Technogym USB and perform a full work-out !

Sauna : score : 4/5

o Towels available.
o Water bucket for moisture increase of air available.

o Convenient steam room (6-8 persons) available.

I had very high expectation regarding the hotel as I have heard a lot from my colleagues about Mercure – their services. I was amazed to see the very opposite. From the very 1st instant of check-in it went very wrong. The receptionist was rude without any reason. As it was during the MEDICA fair time they seem not as busy as they pretend to be. It was more or a less a complete functional hotel. The hotel lobby was awful. The restaurant was too small and the food option was too limited. Even we wanted to book for another hotel restaurant nearby the receptionist had declined to do so claiming their hotel food was good enough!! The room was spacious and good enough. The toiletries were very limited. We have paid 5 times higher than the usual rate but were not treated. I will never recommend this hotel for anyone to stay.

Room Tip: Try to choose the non smoking rooms..avoid 2nd floor.

Was there for the Medica exhibition. The room that I was allocated was in a good corner with a view but I could not get any wifi reception. Have asked the front desk girls to resolve this but nothing was done.
The breakfast has a good spread and the restaurant service is not too bad.
The location is away from the city centre on the opposite side of the Rhine but I do not mind as the U-bahn station is right at the front of the hotel. The only problem is that this U-bahn line ends early before 2000hrs. If you stay out of town late, you will have to grab a cab back.
My colleagues and my only gripe and complains are that the front desks girls are rude and unfriendly. If you can't be patient in answering the client's questions and start giving an attitude, go find another job and not stay in the service sector. You just only give your country a bad name in terms of frontline service.

I was here on businesstrip. This Hotell offer a good level of service, and it is not extremely costly. Dusseldorf should be a not very cheap city, but I stayed very good in this Hotel. Room are large and very confortable, restaurant available for a quickly meal. Could be a larger offer, not too much is listed, but what I got was of good level. The area seem's to be very quite, just offices and Bank around, so not good for shopping, but if you are on business trip, and price of € 129,00 works, could be a good choice. Free internet. Payment Parking available. People very gently on the desk.
