Loved wandering the Altstadt enjoying the Christmas markets and some of the old style bars with there home brewed Alt beer...lovely!

This was a rushed visit, none the less I am grateful that we got here and what I did get to see. Altstadt is a perfect slice of old Germany. The architect is very impressive and the streets are lined with pubs and shops. We treated ourselves to tea and cake at one of the many cafes. No trip here is complete without something from Hinkel Bakery. I indulged in holiday cookies! The bridges over the tree lined canal offer great views and are worth a good study. We ended with a stop at the town hall square and pictures in front of the Jan Wellum statue. Now off to the airport!! I regret I did not get to the Basilica~ next year!

This is the old part of Dusseldorf. It is quite a sleepy place, less people compared to the bustling markets nearby. Has some very nice restaurants though. I would recommend a stroll along the Rhine after dinner.

Like most European cities, the old towns are very quaint and reflect the history of the city. Find time to have a wander around and appreciate the beautiful old buildings and little cafes.

I have only experienced the Altstadt mid-November during Medica, but it is a unique and very enjoyable experience. I am not a "bar person," but in the Altstadt, the bars literally spill out onto the street with table, awnings and heaters set-up. Evenings, everything is packed, but this makes it all the more enjoyable. Find a table and shortly a waiter will put an Alt (local beer) in front of you. Anytime your glass is even near empty, another beer will show up. Waiters make hash marks on a coaster and when you are finished, you pay per hash mark. Beers are really reasonable at about 2-3 Euros. There are many restaurants and most are packed, but that is part of the atmosphere.
