Leonardo Royal Hotel Dusseldorf Konigsallee

Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 14, 2014

Arrived late on a Friday night to join a party in the Aldstat. Easy to find and positioned nicely between the real Dusseldorf and the tourist focus. It felt a little bare bones as the mini bar is intentionally not stocked and the building feels tired despite a refresh. Overall good value at around 60GBP but I would not have been prepared to pay more. Staff were courteous and helpful and retained left luggage gladly.

We arrived at The Leonardo Royal and received a quick check-in. We were allocated a room on the second floor. The room was bright and decorated in a modern style, it did feel a bit business-like however it is part of a chain, not a boutique, so this is what we expected. The bedding, furnishings and décor seemed relatively new. The bathroom had an older suite but had recently had a partial refurb and had everything we needed for a 3 night stay. Only criticism about the bathroom was that the shower was fitted on the long wall of the bath and not at the head, i.e. near the taps, which just seemed a bit odd and awkward to use.

Please note that if you do book this hotel, ask for a room at the rear, we did suffer from tram noise very early in the morning, the hotel is located at a major road and tram intersection. Not a major problem but would have been better without it and in all fairness we did not ask to change rooms.

The general feel to the hotel was good, large reception area with seating and the bar located at the rear. We only visited the bar once, it was big and the staff were friendly however as with all hotels it was expensive and the atmosphere not as good as the many bars in Dusseldorf itself.

We booked on a room only basis and therefore did not have breakfast in the hotel, we chose to grab a coffee and croissant from one of the many cafes nearby.

The location was really good for what we wanted. It is only a 15 minute walk to the Hbh or a few minutes by tram. The Altstadt is also a 10 or 15 minute walk away or two stops on a tram. The train, bus and tram system is very efficient, we bought day tickets for €9.50 for 2 people, good value for money and easy to use. We used the tickets to travel up to Kaiserswerth, Benrath (Schloss Benrath), the Media Harbour (Rhineturm) and to and from the airport.

Recommended places to eat in the Altstadt are Schweine Janes and El Lazo, amazing food at good prices.

Hotel was good, not excellent and the location was great as a central base to explore Dusseldorf.

Stayed for two nights recently. Hotel is clean and tidy though slightly dated. Our room on the seventh floor was fine though very small and probably only suitable for one person. The staff were very polite and efficient. Was reasonable value for money and location was excellent.

Large chain type hotel near the shopping area in Düsseldorf and not too far from the Altstadt area.
Large reception/Bar area with very quick check in, where myself and colleague were upgraded to Junior suites on the 7th and 8th floor. Rooms were very good and overlooked the main road at the front of the hotel. The room had a separate "office" area with tea/coffee making/mini bar/ safe/TV and ironing facilities, although the bathroom was a little small with shower over the bath, but quite adequate.
The large bedroom also had a TV but only a couple of news channels in English. But NO free wifi in the room OR in the lobby area, which for a hotel of this type you would expect such a facility.
Would stay here again having stayed at several hotels in Düsseldorf previously.

We arrived at 11 am and even though this is way too early for a check in, we were given a room on the 1st floor at the back of the hotel (=quiet). That was nice.
The room (105) was rather small. It had twin beds, a writing desk, a build in wardrobe, a trouser press. The lighting in the room was very good. Not so in the tiny bathroom.
Take care when getting out of the bathtub, because the toilet is right next to it, the tub is quite high and I held myself on the bathroom door and slipped when getting out.
The light in the bathroom is not sufficient. And just the necessary amenities : shampoo and bath gel, nothing else.
The room also has a small fridge and a water kettle with coffee and tea.
We also had breakfast, because included in the room rate. Nice breakfast room, plenty to choose from : different kinds of bread, cheese, cold cuts, cereals, eggs, bacon and sausages, fish (salmon, shrimps), fresh fruits, marmelades, juices, sparkling water.
If I'd had to pay separate for breakfast I would have looked elsewhere, because quite expensive (23 Euro per person).
Location is good : at the southern end of the Königsallee, a fair walk from the station and another fair walk to the Medienhafen.
Don't count on free Wifi, because there's none, not even in the lobby. And 5 Euro for 1 hour is outrageous !

When on business trip to Dusseldorf -since many years now- this hotel was always my first choice due to its perfect location. I still recall the times I used to buy "Bau Physic" books for an unforgettable lady Professor back home, at a nearby huge bookshop (with a Greek inscription "Ανθρωπος ζώον νουν εχον" meaning that humans are animals with mind. At that time and till recently this hotel was another Holiday Inn. The difference with Leonardo today is by far evident. Firstly, the airconditioning is at last modified/regulated in a way that we Southerners can survive the night under the hot bed coverings. Where Leonardo is top rated is its nowdays personnel. Young and willing people, very polite and always smiling, avoiding the smothering continuous running after you. They now exactly when they should appear to assist you and this is paramount! The room on the 8th floor was very clean and with everything I would be asking for.
As my daytime was fully covered with meetings, I lacked the "force" to walk to my well known places in Altstadt for dinner and I tried leonardo's availabilities in restaurant Vitruv (could that be Vitruvius?) for 2 successive nights as I was very much pleased with the food and the service.
My starter was beef carpaccio with olive oil and freshly ground pepper, with poached salmon and steamed vegetables as the main course. Both plates were "designed" in the correct way and at this point I must outline that they followed exactly what I asked, which means that they never keep their own style and listen to what you need. For wine, I strongly advise you to choose the white Australian Chardonnay named Copperstone Creek. If you do not wish dessert, then finish off your Chardonnay with an apple sliced with cinammon on top of it. The cmbination is perfect!
Espresso is done here as in Italia...
Rejoice!

We booked the hotel despite the ratings being average as it was in the location we wanted. The hotel has recently been bought from Holiday Inn and all the rooms have had a make over. the room was fresh and comfortably furnished. the bed was very comfortable so a good nights sleep was had. Don't drink the bottled water at 4.50 a bottle it was unnecessarily expensive, there is a shop around the corner selling water for less than a euro. The water should have been complimentary.
The breakfast was a buffet and covered just about everything you would want to eat for breakfast and more, great and well worth it. despite the restaurant being busy the staff were efficient and did not leave dirty plates on your table, they also cleaned and laid up tables quickly to accommodate the guests. We also used the bar which is located in the hotel lobby, the barman was very friendly and helpful as were the reception staff.
the hotel deserves to do well it is a good package and you are made to feel welcome.
