“Excellent location, but a bit disappointed”
Reviewed December 26, 2013

We spent 2 nights just before christmas.
The location of the hotel is exceptional : between the opera, the museums and the Kö.
The hotel is nice and receptions have been well refurbished
However, for a hotel of this category, we were disappointed by the quality of the beds (extremely hard). We also found the price of the breakfast absolutely not competitive taking into account the average quality, and the extremely limited service.

We visited the Christmas markets and stayed a night in this hotel. It is in a great location for the markets, but also for the both high-end shopping which is a short walk across the bridge opposite the hotel, and more mainstream which is not much further.
We had a double room with a sofa bed for our two children. The room was a good size all four of us, and would be pretty substantial for a couple only. The room had all mod-cons and all the usual hotel accessories, plus a few more.
Breakfast was nice although we had to eat in the bar as the restaurant was full, and was served until gone 11 on the Sunday which was nice.
Highly recommend this hotel, and only reason it doesn't get a 5-star is because we weren't there in the hotel / rooms long enough.

Room Tip: If you have small children (less than 10), a double room with a sofa bed is sufficeint - you don'...

Annually I stay at this hotel during the Medica Trade Fair. FINALLY most of the construction in and around the hotel is completed with the U-Bahn trains to be into the tunnels in another year. The hotel lobby and common areas have transformed into more modern and welcoming spaces. The bar continues to offer superb service and is an ideal place to meet and enjoy company over spirits. Our rooms were updated with beautiful bathrooms which was well received. Ask for a room that overlooks the park at the front of the hotel. My colleagues were disappointed in the breakfast which was historically the best, as the food in the chafing dishes was all cold, the choices narrowed and they really missed the omelet station. Endlessly waiting in the queue for the taxi in the morning to head over to the Messe was dreadful. If not for the hotel personnel running out to the Konigsallee and bringing in the cabs for the patrons it would have been a disaster. So if planning to stay here during peak times, allow extra time for the taxi line.

Room Tip: Front of the hotel facing the park.

Visited this hotel during the annual Medica trade fair. Found the location ideal for evening entertainment however not so ideal for visiting the trade fair. During the rush hour, taxis were not reliable or available while the U-bahn trains were very over crowded. A suggestion to the hotel: why not offer a shuttle bus service to your guests? It would be hugely appreciated and take away the only negative point. Regarding the hotel itself, it is a classical beauty, I understand to be over 100 years old. It has the old-world atmosphere that is getting harder to find. My only other comment would be regarding the check-in staff. I realize how busy Medica is, but one would expect to be helped in a more gracious way by the reception. I would be happy to share my experience with the management of the hotel in more detail if they are interested.

Room Tip: I heard from a colleague that there are rooms with verandas for those who like this kind of feature.

Good hotel from reliable brand. Pro: good location in the city center; the room was quiet and spacious enough; well equipped; comfortable bed; 5* breakfast; no complains to the service. Contra: continuous construction nearby the hotel also rooms facing to the main street maybe noisy during week days

Dussledorf is an exhibition (messe) city and that means the hotels know they have captive guests at busy times. The Steigenberger is an old hotel that has been modernised to a high standard, but some of the older, small rooms have been retained. Some face inwards to a courtyard which, if you want a window open for fresh air, resonates with the sound of multiple ventilation exhausts.
The food is good, so is the service but this is another hotel at which the management think they should charge extra for WiFi, as if it's a luxury and not a utility.

Room Tip: Don't accept an inward facing small room.

We booked in this hotel into a 540 Euros suite because it was a last minute need.
We got a spectacular suite, way too much for what we wanted, but it was the only deal in town because of a fair.
Unfortunately the service level is not up to snuff for what you would expect from this hotel.
When we arrived I requested from Housekeeping a blanket and was told they did not have any (!?). Next morning I spoke with the receptionist who told me that of course they had and 5 minutes later it was in our room.
But the best story happened in the bar. My wife didn`t feel well and wanted a toast with butter and jam. The waitress said that this was impossible. It is interesting to know that there was a club sandwich on the menu which is toast stuffed with something. When I complained, the supervisor came and first corroborated what the waitress had said. Surprised I expressed my disappointment that a 5 star hotel can not manufacture a toast. The supervisor said he would see what could be done. After a while he came back saying that OK they could do it but it would take some time. After nearly half an hour a sandwich arrived with chicken, coleslaw and cucumber!
To the credit of the hotel , the director, who was hearing my complains to the receptionist, approached us and invited us to a coffee listening to what we had to say. The next evening we saw him and some other authority walking over and over the service areas looking at what was going on.
It is also worthwhile to mention that when you arrive a bottle of water for Euros 5,40 is waiting for you. Also you get free Wi- Fi, that expires every 30 minutes. Round the corner is the Breidenbacher Hof which not only gives you far better service and attitude but provides you with a room fridge with beverages free of charge, free water and a lounge with free coffee and drinks all day.

Room Tip: We had an enormous suite which is something you most of the time you don`t want to pay for.
