“A classic”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 27, 2012

I have been coming to Schumacher since 1989. They are the most typical "Brauerei" you can think off.
They produce their own beer which is excellent. And they offer you the whole variety of pork knuckle, kasseler, schnitzel, sausages... Bier happen, the tartar one been espectacular. All that at a very reasonable price

“Proper German beer hall experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 22, 2012

Düsseldorf is well-blessed with some great historic beer halls, but the beauty of Schumacher's location on Oststrasse is that it's off the beaten tourist track just enough to make it a more authentic local experience than those in the Altstadt.

Very much the front end of a working (small) regional brewery, the public area is broadly divided into the large beer hall (to the right of the front door) and the small stand-up tap room (or "Schwemme", to the left), although there are restaurant areas hidden up steps and behind curtains for reservations, private groups and busy days. The food is of a very high standard and, consequently, a little more expensive than traditional German pub food. If you're just looking for something to soak up the beer, then a "Käsehappen" (cheese on half a bread roll) or "Metthappen" (raw minced pork and onions instead of cheese) is just the job, particularly in the Schwemme (where drinking - not dining - should be the focus!).

The ONLY beer is Altbier, a mid-brown ale (though not "real" - it's not alive in the barrel, so don't be disturbed by the way the full ones are thrown around!) with a bitter, refreshing taste - this should always be drunk fresh from small (25cl) glasses; the 0.5l glasses are for the tourists! Unlike the other Düsseldorf breweries, Schumacher also make a low-alcohol version called "Schumacher Jung", but it's a little thin (so those trying to take it easy may wish to just drink the full strength Alt at half the speed instead). The other mistake not to make is to try and call over a waiter (the grumpy looking guy in the blue shirt and apron!) or otherwise suggest that he's somehow not doing his job properly - the thing with these traditional beer halls is that visitors are considered guests in the waiters' domain, so treat them with plenty of respect!

“If you like beer, you must visit!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 3, 2012

Some of our group ate here and were very enthusiastic about the food (they had pork knuckle joint) but what we liked was the alt - a fruity, malty, sweetish and refreshing brown beer, served cool. It was table service; the beer mat was marked with each glass we had, and when finished for the night, put the beer mat over the glass and the waiter came to collect the money we owed. Small glasses (0.25l) so they emptied quickly, but kept getting refilled, but in the end, 7 of these was not as much beer as we would have drunk in UK!! The beer was served by tap from the wooden cask that stood on the bar! You don't often see that in UK!!! And it was lovely!

“I will eat here everytime I visit Dusseldorf.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 30, 2012 via mobile

The food is great. Very big portions. I am not a big fan of dark beer, but the beer they have there is great. Our waiter was very nice. He went out of his way to help us with the menu and give us directions when we were leaving.
