Germans, like the British, frequent neighborhood pubs they call kneipen. When we lived in Cologne, Alcazar was our kneipe. The food is fairly plain but reliable, comforting and inexpensive. On any evening, you might find pastas, salads, potato dishes, perhaps duck or something Asian inspired. The wines are decent and don't cost much. You can't go wrong drinking kölsch, the local beer. Sharing tables is common. This is a place I've brought or met friends, Germans and Americans, adults and children. Sometimes, Alcazar hosts special nights in the lead up to Karneval. On those nights, the place is packed and probably not serving food. If you want to go where the locals go for a normal meal, try Alcazar.
