“They try hard to have you enjoy your stay”

This smaller hotel tried to make your stay a good one. Relatively close to the train station- and just a short walk through to the other side with the cathedral- it is a fairly nice setup. Removed from the hustle and bustle but close enough. Rooms had plenty of space with couch and table, desk area, kitchenette , and lots of closet space. I didn't find the bed all that comfy nor do I find myself liking the personal sized comforter all my style. My room had floodlights shining on the windows- but other sides did not. Also the room was located higher than my travel companions - so I was alone in my dislike of the train noise through the night. However my iPod got me through.

This is an excellent base for visiting Cologne. The staff are absolutely charming (perfect English at Reception), our room was very comfortable, large, and the double-glazed windows blocked all noise from the busy road outside. The only thing to bear in mind is that the hotel is on the far side of the station from the Dom and other points of interest in the city, but only a five minute walk, and the station area is clean and well-maintained, and the Dom is literally on the other side of it. Views are necessarily rather dull unless you are a trainspotter (the overhead railway-line of trains leaving the Hauptbahnhof), but as we were arriving and leaving by train, overall the proximity to the station was a positive. Breakfast was good, and the overall experience was positive, I would have no hesitation in returning.

Room Tip: Make sure you have a room with double glazed windows

We were in Cologne over a busy trade fair period so hotel space in the city was at a premium. We settled on the Appartel am Dom based on Trip Advisor but I have to admit we had some reservations after reading some reviews and looking at some of the photographs. But we wanted somewhere near the station and the Dom and so we took a chance.

In hindsight I'm so glad we did. The hotel is a very easy flat walk from the main station and if you're coming by subway from say the exhibition area then there is actually a new subway station (Breslauer Platz) almost adjacent to the hotel and between it and the main station. It is so new they didn't even have the signage up when we were there. But when walking out of the main station take the Breslauer Platz exit to get to the hotel - the opposite side of the platforms to the Dom exit. Cross the main road outside the station and then turn left and follow the main road. The hotel will come up on the right hand corner after a few minutes. It doesn't look much from outside, a 1970's low rise apartment style block, but don't be afraid as we were a little. You can actually see the hotel from the platforms at the main station.

Inside the decor does seem to be stuck in a 1970's time warp but the greeting was warm. We had actually booked a suite and we were surprised to find that it was on the ground floor. But it was huge. I wanted work space while I was in Cologne and the large dining table was perfect for that. The hotel has very fast free Wi-Fi. There was no view to speak of, the large windows in the large lounge and separate bedroom looked out on to Breslauer Platz at street level. But the windows are tinted on the outside so you're not in a fish bowl. The rooms had heating and a kind of air conditioning, so you didn't need to open the windows. The sound proofing was brilliant and at ground level all we heard, or rather felt, was the low rumble of subway trains as they passed underneath the building. I'm a light sleeper and I slept very well. Traffic noise we never really noticed.

Breakfast is in a small windowless room just behind reception but it was a good spread and they cooked breakfasts for you to order as well as offering the normal cold buffet items. A good coffee machine would be a nice addition but otherwise we enjoyed our breakfasts each morning.

Being on the ground floor, so just us, reception and the breakfast room, we never saw any other rooms. But if ours is to go by then I imagine the regular rooms are large too. You just have to move on past the decor. Yes it could do with an upgrade, but it all works and really the living space was in first class condition as far as we could see. The biggest plus for us was just the consistent help and friendliness of the staff. Nothing was too much trouble and they went out of their way to make us feel welcome. We really liked that and we really liked our stay. I'm glad we took a chance and it reminded us to never judge a book by its cover.

Room Tip: Higher is probably better to avoid the subway rumble. But otherwise it's a small hotel with larg...

I had a pleasant experience with is hotel

The rooms were huge though the lobby was quite small.

The hotel is quite close to the main rail station which makes it convinient to travel to nearby cities like Dusseldorf.
The room had a great view of the cologne dome from it balcony and the bathrooms were spotless.

I would return to this hotel if I ever return to cologne

The best triple room I have ever been ! ! ! Very clean, free wifi and good breakfast. A lot of space in the room and very good position( 3 minutes walking from the central train station and 5 from the cathedral).

I loved this hotel. The room was extremely spacious with a very large, comfortable bed. There was a large desk, a couch to relax on and the staff had even supplied a glass full of sweeties! The bathroom was clean and had a bath, unlike many hotels which just have a shower. Very close to the railway station, yet nice and quiet. The gentleman on reception was very friendly and helpful. The only thing missing was tea and coffee making facilities. There was a little kitchenette area, but there was nothing in it - he did offer to provide a kettle if we wanted one, but it is no use without tea, milk etc. All in all though, this was a great hotel and one I would be pleased to go back to.

We really liked the hotel, it's very near to the city center (just behind the railway) and the personnel is friendly and welcoming.
Unfortunately we stayed there in the very middle of August and the weather was very hot. We had a portable AC in the room but was very noisy and we couldn't leave it on during the night. The room is right behind the railway so you can't even leave the window open since it's noisy as well.

Nice breakfast (was included in the rate) with all you may like.
The room was very nice although the furniture is a bit "battered" (nothing bad), but really lovely layout and with all comforts.

If you aren't visiting Cologne in August, it's a great place to stay with great personnel!
