“Overall a good stay”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 18, 2012

My better half and I stayed here for the annual Cologne firework display. We stayed for two nights. I am glad that I read the reviews on here before we came or I think I'd have been a little dissapointed.

I was surprised when we arrived at the furnishings inside the hotel, considering it is a 4*. The enterance is very tired looking and in desperate need of redecorating, as are the rooms themselves. The bathroom was very nice and spacious, nice shower etc but to be honest it showed up even more how much the room itself needs redecorating. The floor appeared dirty because the wooden flooring was that worn, even though it was not actually dirty at all. The view was not great, but it didn't bother us a great deal as we were on such a short stay. I would say make sure your balcony door is locked before you leave the room as although the steps are obviously there in case of fire, that and the shared balcony make it very easy for somebody else to enter the room if the door is not properly locked. The reception area was very nicely decorated and we were gratefull for the lift. We did not eat at the hotel so cannot comment on that. The karaoke bar isn't really our scene, drinks were over priced compared to other close bars but we had a good time in there regardless (surprisingly).

The good points that made this stay were,

The staff, especially the manager. He went out of his way to make sure that we had everything we needed. He was very friendly and helpfull, and we felt that had we any real problems (we didn't) they would be dealt with swiftly and with no trouble.

They make sure that there is no trouble in the 'club/bar', and trouble makers are out before anything happens. This was dealt with very seriously and swiftly by the staff. There is allways one wherever you go, but I've never seen the one bad apple dealt with so well or quickly.

Although the room was tired it was a very comfy stay, both of us slept well without any problems. We didn't find the bar downstairs disturbed us at all, but there are ear plugs in the room in case they are needed.

Very good location, you have access to the underground a few doors away, the Dom and the square is only about 20 minutes walk from the hotel. There is a multi story car park around the corner and it's reasonably priced. There are lots of nice bars and restaurants all around you, many different types in every direction.

The price. Although it isn't 4* this is reflected in the price. Very good value for money.

All in all we had a very nice stay and should we come back to cologne we would stay here again without question.

I loved this quirky hotel and would not hesitate to recommend it. The place has just changed hands and the new owners are very happy to help make the stay as good as it can get. They were more than helpful with my needs while there and I got the impression they are about to give it a bit of a refresh.

The rooms are clean, the facilities modern and my room had a wonderful view over the treetops to some of the church spires in Cologne. Breakfast was served in a sunny happy area off reception and was generous and fresh. Great bread as well.

The only thing with it is, if you are noise sensitive it is above a bar and has a number of dance clubs across the road. On the weekends the noise went to the early hours of the morning. it didn't really bother me as I just shut the double glazed window to keep the yelling out. Weekdays it wasn't a problem at all.

Located on Hohenzollernring, close to all the Cologne night-life. Very good location for a city-break. The room was spacious, with a nice bathroom, and there was a Thai restaurant on the ground floor as well.
The room could do with a bit of a renovation, though.

The Thai Hotel is not a bad hotel. It is centrally located, the rooms are decent and the personal ranges from indifferent to very friendly.

However there is a BIG problem that any potential guest who is a light sleeper and in general sensitive to noise should be aware off. The second floor hosts a Thai karaoke bar which is open seven days a week. During the week it is open until 2am and on the weekend 4am.

Unfortunately the soundproofing is non-existent, as you can hear the singing and the music very loud and clear in your room on the third floor and even on the 6th floor. You cannot escape the sound, even if you use ear plugs. Even if you were to escape to the last floor, there is a huge electrical unit in the hallway, that vibrates so loud that you feel there is a fridge in your bed!

I don't think this hotel deserves four stars and would personally not stay there again!

Though centrally located, clean, and relatively smart, the Thai Royal Hotel has not yet decided whether it was an "oasis of calm", as it falsely advertises itself , or an all-night karaoke bar... Located in a non-descript modern building, the hotel boasts a karaoke-nightclub-bar on its first floor (one up from ground) which remains open until 0400 in the morning, every morning. Rooms are located on floors 3 to 6, but the music and "singing" from the poorly soundproofed bar can be heard throughout the building, until the last drunken customer leaves (usually at daybreak). On saturday nights the volume is raised to concert pitch. Though i started on the third floor, I quickly asked to be moved up after the first sleepless night. Though the sixth floor offered a bit of respite (only three rooms there, one of which is a massive suite), the thumping music and under-average bleating still dominated my nights. When i politely informed the front desk that a decent night's sleep, with the prices they were charging, should be part of their service, i was dismissed with a bored look. Let me put it simply: if you are looking for a half-decent night's sleep in Cologne, please avoid this hotel. A pity, because it has alot going for it.
