“Really home from home!”
Reviewed September 23, 2012

I spent 3 nights at Domstern, in September 2011. This is just an amazing place, with fantastic staff.

I had a single room at 3rd floor. First thing I noticed was the door separating the hallway to rooms from the lift/stairs area and this prevented any noise to come into the room area (though the door might be a bit noisy when closed).

ROOM
I noticed that they are very attentive to each detail. There was a chocolate and a welcome note on my bed when I arrived. Very cute!
My room was small, but very cozy. The bed was very comfortable and large for one person. Room was equipped with fridge, TV, desk, safe, telephone. Bathroom was small as well, but very clean and nice. Free wifi in the room. Very quiet.

LOCATION
The hotel is very well located, just a few minutes (walking) to Cologne Central Station and within walking distance to many Cologne attractions and good restaurants. Though it is very central, it is in a calm and quiet street.

SERVICE
I think the main star here is the hotel's staff. Everyone (and I mean it) is very attentive, helpful and nice. I liked the fact that the owners seem to care about their employees.

Breakfast is really delicious with plenty of options, which varied everyday (they choose a country and used it as the theme for breakfast). A lot of home made items (delicious chocolate/hazelnut spread! butter, yoghurt, bread...) and everything very fresh. Great coffee machine! Then, when you sit, you find a small "magazine", prepared daily, with weather forecast and suggestions about what to do in Cologne everyday: another proof of how careful they are with small details!

Definitely, this is the place to stay. If you are looking for fancy places, with a lot of hotel amenities, you should go elsewhere. But if you want a nice, clean, comfortable place with amazing staff, then Hotel Domstern is for you. That's where I will stay when coming back to Köln!

They're a friendly & caring lot at the Domstern, e.g.:
* I needed an ice-pack so the staff froze it for me then placed it in our room just before they left so it was ready for me on my return.
* We arrived on avery hot day & found our unconditioned room overheated - a large fan was quickly provided that made the room comfortable.
The breakfast is an "extended" continental - each day they take a different country as a theme and provide extras. Their coffee machine is available while reception's attended & the coffee they use tasted great.
Our 3rd (top) floor room was small but adequate for tourists and the bed was very comfortable, especially after they gave us extra pillows.
The daily newsletter was informative - without it I would have missed seeing a van Gogh at a Cologne museum I hadn't heard of.
Location is just a few minutes walk to the station.

Room Tip: If the weather's hot try to book one of the few air-conditioned rooms.

We stayed at the Hotel Domstern for 6 days and it went beyond all our expectations. The location is great (a few blocks from the Dom and train station), the rooms immaculate and the staff were helpful and gracious. We had a minor issue with our room (fridge and A/C weren't cooling to full capacity) so we were upgraded the next day to a junior suite at no extra cost. The front desk staff were always eager to offer sight seeing suggestions and to give explicit directions on how to get to and fro. Breakfast consisted of homemade breads, jams, butter (yes, they churn their own butter), yogurt and curd cheese (again both home made) and an assortment of fruits, eggs, meats and cheeses. Breakfast varied daily so that you had different options to choose from throughout your stay. Make sure you taste the fresh strawberry and apricot jams! Internet worked flawlessly and you can even rent an iPad to check your email if you so choose. The standard rooms are rather small so if you can manage to upgrade you will have a more pleasant experience. We would definitely stay here again and would recommend the Hotel Domstern to all our friends and relatives.

Room Tip: upgrade to a junior suite

Nice hotel very close to central Cologne. Very clean with nice friendly staff and we had nothing to complain about. Only thing is that it's a bit sterile (as most hotels in Cologne probably are) having been completely renovated and cleared of any interesting bits!

Dear Londonhillclimber,
thank you for sharing your feedback.
Even after hundreds of reviews it`s still always surprising and interesting to read what guests think about our place. Especially if the feedback often is so excellent expactations tend to be high (sometimes higher than we can fullfill unfortunately). We are a small, basic 3 star Hotel and for many guests that`s just what they have been looking for. We are glad that this was also the case for you.
Of course the recommendations or suggestions are especially valuable as they help us further improve our service. So we read your comments very carefully. Probably you are right- 7 years ago the Domstern was completely renovated, the beautiful facade and entrance door from 1890 give the house its character, but inside its business and the rooms maybe lack the character that the building still has.
Conclusion is, we - the staff have to give life and create the atmosphere and we will do our best to make you feel at home when staying with us.
By the way, maybe you check our new place "Stern am Rathaus" when coming back.
We had the chance to renovate it last year and I think the architect did a magnificent job to create a modern building but still conserve the feeling of an old small townhouse.
Hoping to see you back in Cologne in either place,
please stay with us
your hosts

& the Domstern team

Spent three nights in the Hotel Domstern in July. Location, location, location! Ten minutes walk from the train station and cathedral, and a pleasant stroll to the river. We managed the walk from train station with all our luggage and we're not backpackers!
We were on the top floor and our triple-bedded room was spacious (for Europe), nicely appointed, clean and fresh. There's a tiny lift (elevator) for those who don't like stairs or for transporting luggage. Little candies/chocolates on the pillow each day was a special touch.
Breakfasts were good, with a nice bit of international flair (each day, they feature breakfast foods from different parts of the world). We enjoyed this, as it means you don't have exactly the same food each day.
Desk staff were very friendly and helpful. I speak a few words of German, but their English was (of course) much better and they were happy to give us information, directions, etc.
I would definitely stay here again. Throw open your windows and glory in the sound of the church bells!

I nice little hotel, without the bravoure of overpriced 4-5 star hotels.
Friendly receptionist team, no lobby and hotel personnel all night, which enables them to reduce the price. I checked in at 9.30 pm, just in time to be helped by the receptionist, but they had already prepeared the whole reception in a personal envelope.

Price was very competitive, room somple and clean.

Convenience store accross the street at the corner open until late (10pm) - so no overpriced minibar consumptions. Free wifi access was given without having tomask for it.

Parking accross the street for an additional 10€

didn't have breakfast - can't testify to the quality of it

As a lonely business traveller - this is all i need!
