Owner description: KD, the White Fleet of the Rhine, is the most experienced river cruise company in the world. With a history going back more than 185 years, KD is the only shipping company to run daily services along the entire stretch of the Rhine between Cologne and Mainz. On the Romantic Middle Rhine between Rüdesheim, the Loreley in St. Goar and Boppard our modern ships cruise the whole year round. The 14 ship strong KD fleet gives guests a choice of countless ways to enjoy the sights.

These boats are a lovely way to see the Rhine, but I'd suggest combining them with trains as otherwise they can be very long days. We just used these boats for short trips (e.g. St Goar - Bacharach, etc) but some people seemed to stay on there for hours and hours and hours (e.g. 6-8 hours) at a time and this didn't seem the nicest way to spend time. Combing trains with these wonderful boats is a nice way to do it, and ensure you don't get bored.

August September is a good time of year for a Rhine trip as the weather is still warm. The return day trip from Cologne to Linz is a very full day and very enjoyable. On leaving Cologne there is an initial industrial section of the river which is not so interesting but beyond that the little towns and castles are delightful. The boat stops at various towns along the way to pickup and set down passengers. Linz is a beautiful town with a fine history that is well set up for a tour on foot using a map. The boat also serves food and drink and the meals in the restaurant are good and at reasonable prices. A great day.

Both my wife and myself decided we would go on a Cruise ship and travel down the Rhine, to Rudesheim, the KD boat the Godesburg, sailed at 9am from Boppard, as a mid-morning break we had a coffee and a tea as the boat did not dock until 1.15pm, we then decided we would have lunch on board, the steward left the menu on the table and disappear, but later came back but we were not ready to order, he mutter something, the next time we seen him was when the boat was almost in Rudesheim, he only came back then to collect the money for the tea and coffee that we had earlier.
On our return journey we caught the Paddle Steamer back to Boppard, the stewards were Well-mannered, and it was like being on the Q E 2 they were extremely helpful we enjoyed their food and company. It would appear that some young stewards need to be better trained because the young lad that came to our table had little interest in his job.

If you are thinking of taking this tour, save your money! Prior to purchasing tickets on this cruise we talked to two different people at the KD ticket kiosk for information, however they spoke very little English. The boat was nice and clean, immediately given a menu for drinks and food. We had brought our own lunch aboard, knowing that their food would be overpriced. The first three hours we cruised by mostly industrial area which was very disappointing. There were about six or seven choices where to visit along the route, we chose Linz and found there was not much there to discover. We had almost two hours there waiting for the boat to return for our looooong trip back to Cologne. No commentary given, no brochure to read as to what we were passing, or looking at. The time spent with my daughter was priceless, but the trip pointless.

I had low & realisitic expecations after reading the reviews & decided to try it anyways...what a waste of a day & evening. My mom & I purchased a round trip from Cologne to Linz. This means leave at 9 am & get back at 8 pm. We knew the food would be bad so we packed our own picnic which seemed a bit frowned upon. Considering we spent $100+ USD we felt it was our perrogative (Americans!) It was hard to find much online about any of the destinations, and since you can only disembark one time, you have to choose wisley. Everyone said there was more to see in Linz. Really? Like what? A bunch of vacant stores & ones selling junk, nothing authentic German. The most lively thing was the graveyard at the church! The boat was nice, and clean, and perhaps it was Senior day, or the local seniors are just uninformed like this American. No exaggeration, it took the first 3 1/2 hours before scenary was not industrial.(Keep in mind, you have to see all that again on the way back!) At Koenigswinter it became decent. But, the commentary was about zilch. Maybe they'd mutter a sentance about what you were passing, but mostly not. We had to make up our own! No brochure to tell you either, or help you decide what destination might be worth it...perhaps none really are? Further south on the Rhine must be better, but nothing from Cologne to Linz was worth 11 hours of total boredom. Luckily my mom & I can crack eachother up & try to make the best of it. I wish we'd have just gone to a cafe & ate $50 of cake each....seriously.
