“Wonderful design hotel. Beautiful SPA but for nudists”
Reviewed May 13, 2012

I found this hotel really beautiful. The room was spacious and with nice design. Really liked the wooden floor. Nice SPA area, very big with sauna and swimming pool. Would prefer if it would not be for nudists though. Also don't like that they charged for internet in the room. There is a free internet point in the lobby. Central position. Altogether a nice hotel where I would return. It is not cheap but ok for what it offers. Nice staff at the front desk. Breakfast ok but not exceptional.

Stayed over for 1 night in this Hotel. Room was very large and quiet, there is free entrance to the Therme for Hotel guests which was great value and a very relaxing experience. The Therme was open till midnight, so even when you arrive in the evening, there is still plenty of time to enjoy. We ate at the Hotel Restaurant, adjacent to the Therme which was very good quality and selection at an average price. Parking is in a nearby parking house 5 min walk from the Hotel - probably the only downside and costs extras (Euro 10).
Breakfast was very nice and plenty and good variety of continental and cooked breakfast with fresh fruit salad. Would definitely stay there again and recommend.

There are two Mauritius Hotels in Cologne, owned by the same company. One is a standard hotel, right downtown near the Rhine, and it's probably a perfectly nice place, but I have never stayed there. When in Cologne I always stay at the Mauritius Hotel & Therme, which is the "sister hotel" of the other, but is basically a hotel devoted to the "Therme", or Spa, and specifically various types of Saunas.

In order to appreciate the Mauritius Hotel & Therme, you have to appreciate the lure of the sauna in German culture. It is very popular and virtually every large city has one or more large sauna complexes, but it is unusual to find such a complex in conjunction with a hotel.

German saunas can be quite esoteric. As another reviewer pointed out, the Mauritius Hotel & Therme has at least 6 different types of saunas, with different temperatures, different aromas, different lighting. And this is in addition to what is known in America as a "steam bath", two whirlpool tubs, a warm salt-water pool which is outside (It's really delightful to be soaking in a warm pool while being rained on!), and a large indoor swimming pool. Plus there is a rooftop area, with a spectacular view of Cologne, devoted to sunbathing.

The main issue here, especially for American visitors, is that total nudity is optional in the spa area, and at the sunbathing area on the roof. And only a small percentage of visitors opt to wear bathing suits. So this is not a hotel for people who would be sensitive about this matter. And the guests comprise a cross-section of society, including the corpulent and the elderly. Anybody who anticipates being surrounded by nude super-models is going to be seriously disappointed. The focus is on the sauna experience, which is almost spiritual and, at least to the Europeans, the nudity is inconsequential and completely non-erotic.

And to the Germans, the sauna is frequently a family experience, including small children. This is something which could never play in prudish and suspicious America; naked children in the same room as unrelated naked men. But in Germany, and many other places in Europe, this is just taken for granted.

Cologne is one of Europe's most beautiful and charming cities, with lots of traditional tourist attractions. The Mauritius Hotel & Therme is only about a 5 minute walk from a major Metro stop, and is only about a leisurely 10 minute walk to the main shopping district and a 15 minute walk to the Central Station. The staff is very helpful and speaks English fluently. The breakfast buffet is quite nice and reasonably priced, and the bar/dining area is also open for lunch and dinner. Although there are many nice restaurants nearby, many sauna-oriented guests opt to never leave the hotel. Bathrobes are acceptable attire throughout the hotel and bathrobes, towels and slippers can be rented for a very reasonable price.

I can say, unequivocally, that the Mauritius Hotel & Therme is the most relaxing place I've ever stayed.

In trying to think of problems associated with this hotel, I can only come up with one thing. Right next door is a large church, which rings its bells every morning, not just on Sundays. At least one hotel employee believes that they do it for spite, because the guests shouldn't be enjoying themselves so much.

Unless one is looking for a spa in the middle of a city - and as a city traveler I do not see why would one would enjoy a heated indoor pool, skip the Mauritius when visiting Cologne. In my understanding this hotel, well past it's best, was conceived during the booming years of Western Germany, when everyone with a mild tennis elbow would get a taxi ride to a "Spa" similar to this one, paid by the "Kassa" ( health insurance ). The hotel looks and feels like most social insurance systems in the western world: shabby and worn, out of cash for basic maintenance, but staffed by well meaning people who know their efforts are pointless. The system is broken and so are most things at this hotel: above all the 500 EUR per night without breakfast plus another 5EUR per day for crap internet.
Avoid!

We wanted to have a quiet two days in one of Germany´s biggest little cities. This hotel was perfect.
The spa enabled us to chill out after the long flights. The city is beautiful in the evenings with the "Altstadt" being so close, bars, discos, the river ...all a perfect charm.
The people are very nice and friendly..the rooms nicely decorated.

We enjoyed it very much.

Our room was nice, the swimming pool and jacuzzi great, and there is a little bar/cafe you can eat in with your robe on. The staff was nice too. We arrived in Cologne on a very hot day with the temperature well into the 90's and found that none of the room have a/c. They did bring up an electric fan which I kept on all night right next to the bed. In the morning the breakfast-4.5 Euros and good with scrambled eggs and bacon offered along with the usual-was in the spa cafe and it isn't air conitioned either. The room was very uncomfortably hot and we sweated through our breakfast. The location of the hotel isn't the greatest in my opinion. It was a long walk to the old section of the city and the area around the river looked really great.

Lovely hotel within walking distance of the main shopping area, Cathedral and Christmas Markets. Good sized rooms with free access to the spa facilities for hotel guests. Bathrobes, towels and slippers can be hired for 5 euros a set for use in the spa. Freen locker key on request from reception. Warning to those unused to spas in Germany, this is a clothes free zone and kids ARE allowed - so worth bearing that in mind if you are not comfortable baring all.

Some noise from nearby pub/club on the Saturday evening - easily solved by spending the evening in the spa.

Spa facilities include at least 6 saunas (varying temperatures, humidity and scents - including one ladies only), a steam room, a large, warm endless pool to swim in, various jacuzzis (hot and cold), foot baths, a hot/cold pebble walk and the best of all.....a heated, salt water pool with the roof open to the sky (I spent 2 hours in that on our last night!)

Staff were helpful and friendly, rooms spaceous and clean with plenty of sockets. Large flat screen TV and minibar. Bed was the usual 2 mattress German style with 2 single quilts - which made for a really good night's sleep.

Bathroom was clean and functional with a wet room style shower rather than an enclosure, good anti slip flooring and good quality toiletries included.

No kettle or tea and coffee making facilities but that was not an issue as neither hubby or myself use those. Wireless internet ddn't work in our room either - but did in the lobby so no great loss there as there were plenty of comfy seats available to use.

Womderful midday checkout so we were able to sleep in after a long, relaxing evening in the spa.

Would we go back? Definitely, in fact I've just booked our next visit in February!
