Good and reliable hotel in a great location, 10 minute walk to the Dom and train station (a straight line, you will not get lost!).

There are many bars and restaurants (including the great Paffgen) right by the hotel.

Rooms are large, though bathrooms are tiny.

We staid for 1 weekend night. We arrived saturday at 6pm and had to wait 20 minutes to check in. Only one person was behind the reception desk and the other staff in the office behind were apparently not in the mood to help...

At around 8pm we tried to order in the bar and had to wait 15 minutes for someone to show up and give our order. 10 minutes later that person came back because he had forgotten the order. Another 10 minutes later he managed to arrive with the wrong order anyway. All without one apology...

so good hotel but lousy service

The hotel is one of a dozen, cannot think of anything memorable good or bad. Location is excellent for any purpose in downtown Cologne, rooms are what one would expect from Mercre anywhere in Europe, comfortable with the usual amenities but nothing special. I woud consider it a bit pricey for the overall quality level, but so are all hotels in Cologne. I tried something a little cheaper last time I visited, got something much worse, so by Cologne standards this hotel is reasonably good value.

We stayed here on a "hidden rate" from a major hotel consolidator. The hotel is in a nice area in the Friesien Quarter, about a mile from the main train station, but two stops on the subway (recommended if you have luggage). It looks to have been updated recently. Our room was a decent size and had a refrigerator with a minibar and a nice bathroom. It did not have a great view but did face the inner part of the hotel. We found it convienent to Neumarkt (the start of the shopping district) and a reasonable walk to the old city (about a mile)--you pass by the remantes of the old Roman tower and wall along the way. There were two main drawbacks. No air conditioning, except in the lobby, and no free WIFI in the room. The latter seems to be traditional for the more expensive hotels--lesser hotels often provide free WIFI. The lack of AC would not have been so bad had it not been for the rather hot week when we visited. A fan would have helped, but there was none. The nice tub helped us though to cool off. The hotel is convenient to many bars and restarants in the area. We did not choose the hotel's breakfast (charge) as there were any number of bakeries nearby as well as small convenience shops. We would consider staying here again as the location was good and the staff was very good. The lack of free WIFI was balanced somewhat by the availability of a free terminal to check e-mail. We dd not have mch of a problem with noise. However, this was August when many businesses are on vacation (including the hotel restaurant).

Room Tip: I have a feeling that rooms on the inside of the hotel will be quieter.

The hotel is larger than you would expect from the entrance. Compact reception and bar/restaurant area as you enter.

The rooms are perfectly adequate with comfortable beds. The bathrooms are in the small side but with bath and shower with excellent water pressure.

There is noise late at night from bars in the area which can be annoying if you're trying to sleep, but I'd be happy to stay again. Fairly good value but breakfast somewhat over priced at €18.

Rather old furbished room, the carpets do require a revival, you don't want to end up barefoot on them. The bathroom is also old and not very comfortable. The air conditioning is ancient and without a remote control, as well as very loud. Our night was not very pleasant, you can hardly rest due to the heat wave and lack of comfort.
The location is very good, easy accessible by foot from the rail station.
We have not tried the breakfast since we found the requested 18 Euro (!!!!) very very expensive.
We will think twice before returning!

Room Tip: Depends on what you understand as good room. If you need A/C then on the street side, if you require...
