“Good business hotel but disappointing services”
Reviewed May 31, 2009

Me and my partner went to Cologne for a long weekend and decided to stay at this hotel. We arrived there around 3:15pm and we were informed by the receptionist that our room was not ready and it would probably take about 2 hours to be ready. She offered us a smoking room instead. As we are not smokers, we refused. No drink, no apologies were offered, it almost felt like it was our fault to be on time for a room that we have requested and paid. According to the email received informing the rules/policy from this hotel, stated clearly that a non smoking room was garantee from 3:00pm.

After a couple of hours, our room was provided not on the floor that has been previously informed and with a less pleasant view. The room also had a horrible noise coming from the bathroom but once the reception was informed, somebody came up quickly to fix it.

The spa on the basement is really beautiful. It has a beautiful swimming pool, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and nice relax area in and outdoors.

The breakfast was a bit disappointing. The assortiment was not at the expected level for its price (24 Euro/person) and for what we are used to have in German hotels and at the Radisson. The breakfast staff weren't informative, efficient, friendly (except one guy a bit older than the others, nearly 30's, working alone in a separated part of the restaurant). They were looking like machines walking around without looking to anybody, even if you were crossing then on the way to the kitchen, you had to way so they would go first without saying " sorry, excuse me".

Parking place at the hotel is expensive but you feel safe.

Glass door for the bathroom is beautiful, but we didn't feel really comfortable as you can see the person on the toilet from outside. Perhaps if you are staying alone in the room...

In general, we found the staff too young and not motivated. They seem not to be aware that they are working for a 4 stars hotel. They need to know about some specific manners while dealing with gasts.
They definetly have a lot to learn from the Radisson's service.

I will not advise, at this point, the travel department of my organisation to book our several business trips to Cologne, at this hotel.

The Strassebahn stops directly in front of this hotel, making it very easy to get around. Make sure you have ample coins for the automated ticket machine though, it doesn't take bills. The staff in this hotel was very friendly and eager to help out with directions and sight-seeing suggestions. Easy underground parking. Rooms were immaculate. Breakfast was AMAZING! We also checked out the spa---it was well equipped, modern and clean sauna, steam, whirlpool and swimming pool. Highly recommended.

We came back to the Dorint An der Messe for the second time in three years. The reception staff remembered us and addressed us by name before we had checked in. We were given help unloading our luggage (we were exhibiting at the International Sweet Market 2009) so could look after our daughter (nine and a half months) whilst our luggage was taken up to the room.

The room was excellent, clean, bright, with coffee-making facilities and a minibar.

Our daughter had her own cot - and a children's welcome pack with puppet facecloth, baby soap and bath gel.

As we were setting up the stand on the Saturday and the crèche at the Trade Fair was not open until the Sunday, we had asked for the hotel to organise a babysitter for us. Their policy is to ask their staff whether anyone wants to do it as overtime. This suited us fine, because we knew that the person looking after our little one had been vetted. Our babysitter was excellent .

In all we had an excellent stay and will be returning next year.

The hotel facility is great: fabulous interior, great rooms, fantastic breakfast, 15 minutes walk from the Dome, cool bar with some live music (i guess there was a special occasion ), ...

However, during my stay we continuously had to face small problems that distorted our stay in the hotel.
For instance
- The reception was terrible: first i received a smoker room, then i had to circle in the hotel for like 10 minutes until i received a bath coat;
- the wellness part is average, but eg. the steam bath only worked for max. 5 minutes during our 3+1 hours stay there;
- the tv was a real crap - even the remote controller did not work;
- no wifi just lan connection;
- i had to pay a fortune for the parking, etc etc etc

In sum, it could have been a very great hotel, but due to so many problems i did not leave with pleasant memories. Hope they will improve - all these problems could be solved easily with more attention from the management...

  • Liked — The hotel building + the room
  • Disliked — The spa was a disappointment in comparison what i expected from the ads

Their Internet access "rip-off" scheme ruined an otherwise pleasant stay.
If you ask for Internet access, they sell you a password for 10 Euros. If you foolish plug into the well-marked connection with the prominently-displayed cable, (instead of using WIFI) you will be charged an ADDITIONAL 22 Euros!
This is not-so-coincidentally the identical price for breakfast, (which is hidden by adding it to your room rate on the bill.)

Most folks would not notice. It is just an underhanded way to make a few extra bucks. It reveals the true nature of the owners. Thus, I won't do business with them again (and I will write many reviews exposing this rip-off.)

  • Liked — Clean, very tasty breakfast
  • Disliked — Internet rip-off scheme. Very unethical. Purposefully deceptive. 32 Euros for 24 hrs! (but you think it will be just 10)

Our company just exhibited at Koelnemesse during Intermot. We booked through the tradeshow organizers and received decent rates. However, once we checked in, our rates were changed to 20 Euros more per person, so a double room was up charged 40 Euros and single rooms were up charged 20 just so they could say the buffet was included. Two of my double rooms only had one person in them due to staff changes, but those rooms were still charged the extra 40 Euros. Initially I informed my staff that the buffet was extra so some people skipped it and ate at the fairgrounds, yet they were still charged the extra cost. Just pay attention to your bill.
Other than that, this hotel is in an ideal location for the fairgrounds. The East entrance is across the street. The Dux restaurant has good food and the bar is nice (if you do not mind the smoke). I had a single room and it had plenty of space. The bed was comfortable and the whole room was clean.
If you are bringing kids, you may not want to let them have the TV remote. The mid-range channels are PayTV. You need a code to see them, but previews of shows in progress run for a few seconds. Some of those shows are adult films.
There is a clever safe in the room that runs off of your own magnetic strip card (credit card or otherwise) for locking and unlocking. To unlock, you have to use whatever card you used to lock it.

My husband , daughter and i stayed here in February.

The hotel is really well placed as mentioned already. Trams stop right outside the door and you can walk to the train station in 5 mins which gives more trams and trains.

We walked into the centre to the Dom on the first day and this was a really pleasant 15minute walk with some fabulous views across the Rhine.

The hotel room we had was spacious, had a proper bed for our daughter as opposed to a sofa bed. The bathroom was clean and adequately filled with the usual shampoos etc.

The mine bar and coffee machine were well stocked too, it was lovely to have filter coffee in our own room!

Breakfasts were vast and plentiful with variety which delighted our daughter.

The spa facilities were fantastic though must admit my daughter was a little shocked (and giggly - she's at that age) at the naked businessmen, but they seemed to stay more in the jacuzzi/steam area and we were mainly in the pool so it didnt worry us too much.

This hotel was a great base, staff were friendly and helpful, the room spotless and very peaceful, all in all an excellent stay and we would go back.
