I have been looking forward to staying at this hotel for several years so have to admit disappointment and a level of sadness.
The tower is stunning and the conversion to a hotel was a superb job 21yrs ago but that's really where it ends. It does just feel like its rather stuck in the 90s.
Our room was on the 8th floor and although spacious and comfortable, it was very dated, the cream carpets were marked and dirty, the bathroom dark and very old fashioned, the double bed was two singles zipped together and the balcony NOT private. A lovely idea to pop out and have a look at the view but anybody on the 8th floor can do the same and just wander around the entire circular balcony so on two occasions people walked by and looked in - the level of privacy is therefore non existent.
We stayed there in September so it wasn't hot but it wasn't cold either and at night the room was stuffy. There is no individual control of the AC and this is decided by the hotel. Given you don't feel you can open the door to let fresh air in, it felt uncomfortable most nights.
Then there is the level of staffing which across the entire hotel was really really poor.
On more than three occasions we waited at the front desk for 15-20mins to be served because there was either just one or nobody on the desk. At one point three guests were waiting incredulous that nobody was there. I felt so sorry for the poor individual who was manning the desk.
We ate at the restaurant - theoretically one of the best in cologne and whilst the food was indeed lovely it was VERY expensive and quite frankly not worth it given the awful service. Again - not really down to individuals as such but the entire restaurant was being waited on by just two guys who were young and run ragged. We waited 25 minutes in between having the menu given to us and taking the order and then every time we wanted something be it cutlery, more wine, water or whatever we had to somehow attract their attention which took forever and made for an annoying evening - €185 later I did not feel happy.
The restaurant itself is actually also really 90's and needs some sort of attention which is a shame.
The hotel itself just seems to lack any character or soul. There were no real communal areas that were busy, no buzz, no life. The bar was quiet and when we were served there the one waitress had to be asked 4 times to fill up our glasses with our wine which was kept chilled behind the bar.
The roof has an amazing restaurant and bar location which apparently due to some near fatal accident the chef was involved with, the hotel have decided to keep it closed and use it for private events only. What a crying shame - one of the best views in cologne is closed away and only thanks to persuading a member of staff to show us the area, were we lucky enough to see it.
This must surely be a huge asset. It just cries out as another example of the hotel management not having a clue about what to do to run this hotel.
The location is great. Room sizes great. Staff nice but very young and stressed and under pressure. A real shame.
