I have been looking forward to staying at this hotel for several years so have to admit disappointment and a level of sadness.

The tower is stunning and the conversion to a hotel was a superb job 21yrs ago but that's really where it ends. It does just feel like its rather stuck in the 90s.

Our room was on the 8th floor and although spacious and comfortable, it was very dated, the cream carpets were marked and dirty, the bathroom dark and very old fashioned, the double bed was two singles zipped together and the balcony NOT private. A lovely idea to pop out and have a look at the view but anybody on the 8th floor can do the same and just wander around the entire circular balcony so on two occasions people walked by and looked in - the level of privacy is therefore non existent.

We stayed there in September so it wasn't hot but it wasn't cold either and at night the room was stuffy. There is no individual control of the AC and this is decided by the hotel. Given you don't feel you can open the door to let fresh air in, it felt uncomfortable most nights.

Then there is the level of staffing which across the entire hotel was really really poor.

On more than three occasions we waited at the front desk for 15-20mins to be served because there was either just one or nobody on the desk. At one point three guests were waiting incredulous that nobody was there. I felt so sorry for the poor individual who was manning the desk.

We ate at the restaurant - theoretically one of the best in cologne and whilst the food was indeed lovely it was VERY expensive and quite frankly not worth it given the awful service. Again - not really down to individuals as such but the entire restaurant was being waited on by just two guys who were young and run ragged. We waited 25 minutes in between having the menu given to us and taking the order and then every time we wanted something be it cutlery, more wine, water or whatever we had to somehow attract their attention which took forever and made for an annoying evening - €185 later I did not feel happy.

The restaurant itself is actually also really 90's and needs some sort of attention which is a shame.

The hotel itself just seems to lack any character or soul. There were no real communal areas that were busy, no buzz, no life. The bar was quiet and when we were served there the one waitress had to be asked 4 times to fill up our glasses with our wine which was kept chilled behind the bar.

The roof has an amazing restaurant and bar location which apparently due to some near fatal accident the chef was involved with, the hotel have decided to keep it closed and use it for private events only. What a crying shame - one of the best views in cologne is closed away and only thanks to persuading a member of staff to show us the area, were we lucky enough to see it.

This must surely be a huge asset. It just cries out as another example of the hotel management not having a clue about what to do to run this hotel.

The location is great. Room sizes great. Staff nice but very young and stressed and under pressure. A real shame.

Dear Mr J,

many thanks for reviewing our services after your recent stay at the hotel and your feedback.
We regret that you did not raise your comments with our restaurant staff or the front desk team. We therefore were not able to correct our mistakes during your stay.
We are currently undergoing a variety of steps with changes in the hotel. However not all can be done immediately.
For your next stay in Cologne we would be happy to be your hosts again to meet your expectations for the hotel stay.

With kind regards,
Hanjo Koch, Director of Sales & Marketing

We were exhausted, hungry and for one of us in need of medical help when we rocked up at this hotel late one Sunday on our way down to Italy for our honeymoon. The hotel couldn't have been more helpful. Not only was the room service good, but the parking was easy, our room was comfortable and the next day the hotel helped us find an emergency doctor within minutes and gave us a free late checkout to help us when we got back. It's not the cheapest but the service was fantastic and we felt we were in the best possible hands in that pretty nightmarish situation in a strange city. Also, they put Haribo bears on the pillow which has to be chalked up as a win.

amazing buidling, looks great outside and inside. staff was helpful and checking in was done in less than 2-3 minutes. the room has a good size and the bed is comfortable. plenty of storage space and adequate bathroom.
on a negative side I ould list the poor air quality. if there was air con I did not feel it.
the towels are the worst hotel towels I have ever had. quite small and thin,
location is good, less than a minute from the tube station and a short walk to the center.
was ok for the deal I got but would not pay the normal rate.

It's an expensive hotel without what you expect from a so called "5 Star hotel". I stayed in a room in the 10th floor for 2 nights. The air condition was not working and in the middle of summer it was very unconvenient at nights. There was no temperature control in the room at all! The head shower was not working either and it was a terrible experience to take a shower! In fact it was like taking shower in the cheapest hotels! The breakfast was expensive yet less than ordinary. The roof garden that could be the only good thing about the hotel was closed. I don't reommend it to anyone and don't stay in it again. The good things were proximity to the city center (10-15 minutes walk) and polite staff( but not more than what you expect from ordinery hotel staff).

...the building is beautiful, no question about that, but the service is terrible. You're paying a lot of money for one of the worst services we've ever experienced. it is definetly over-rated, maybe you have to be a sports superstar to be treated like it should be. and additionally they had problems with the aircon and offered fans to take up to the room .. BUT when we decided to take one they were already out of stock ... a few weeks after our stay I wrote a letter to the managing director of the hotel about the main things that went wrong and asked for an answer ... which I didn't get during the last eight months!!! there are definetly better places to be in cologne, i would not recommend that hotel.

I stayed here recently on business and enjoyed my experience. The staff were friendly and helpful and the service excellent.

I felt the rooms were a little basic considering the price and the funky renovation of this water tower. However I still enjoyed the hotel. Didn't have the opportunity to sample the bar or the restaurant but both looked good.

Location is great, in the heart of Cologne but not too close to the bustling streets.
