“Perfect location!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 8, 2013

I recently stayed at the Eden while attending a trade fair in Cologne. Its ideally located opposite The Dom (Cathedral). The main train station is about 250m away as is the river and "Old Town". The Hotel is clean and my room was a good size. The bathroom was a little on the small side but everything worked as it should.

My room overlooked the main square and I had a magnificent view of the Dom.

Breakfast was ideal - fresh breads, meats and cheese! Wifi was troublesome but eventually worked.

Room Tip: for a view of the Dom - 6th or 7th floor and ask for a room at the front!

The hotel is located in the heart of the city center, close to the dome, the shopping area and teh train station.

We booked a room for 2 nights (21st and 22nd of December 2012). We arrived early the first day and were able to check in already at 08:30am in room 309, without extra cost.

The hotel and the rooms were very clean and modern (no carpets). Also the bathroom was renovated and had a lovely rain shower.

Breakfast was on the 1st floor on day 1 and on the 6th floor on day 2, both with a wonderful view on the Dome. Breakfast itself was not outstanding but evrything was there and we liked it.

One remark: both mornings at 08.30am they were working on the building which made a very loud noise. The hotel did not warn us for this in advance.

+ State of the art entrance & key systems
+ Nice bathroom
+ Spacy room

- Noisy hallway (wooden floors in combination with bare walls)
- Floor in room not cleaned properly (for long time - dustflakes everywhere)
- Impersonal reception

This hotel has so much going for it, I wish I could love it, but there were a couple of issues. First the good. It appears newly renovated, with clean, comfortable modern rooms and big bathrooms (that have wash clothes and good hairdryers). The breakfast buffet was good, with lots of variety and looked out over the Dom. The location is great, especially for the Dom Christmas market. You walk out the front door, hang a left and 30 seconds later you are in the market. And it's 5 minutes to the train station and Altstadt.

Now the not great. Not bad, just not great. The modern decor, with hardwood floors and for all intents, bare walls, echos terribly. Especially from above. For 3 nights it sounded as though someone was bowling in the room above me, all hours of the night. With hardwood floors you expect some noise, but this seemed extreme. The front desk was also hit or miss with their helpfulness and understanding of English - I think the hotel caters more toward the German businessman than the tourist crowd. The locations of the various Christmas markets seemed to stump the girl who checked us in.

All in all, it's a very nice hotel but the noise issue was a problem for me.

Room 303 looked brand new and was immaculate. Incredibly spacious with a full-sized couch, and large bathroom (with separate shower and bath).Faced onto side street so rodinarily would be much quieter - given it doesn't front onto main pedestrian area. Would definitely stay here again and can heartily recommend it. Breakfast excellent (and available until 10am, which is great). Charge-back not available in hotel restaurant/bar area, and it's common in many other places too. Even at a huge IT-type store (Media Markt) where we needed to go 'cos we'd forgotten our conversion power plugs from Aus to Europe - even there, it had to be cash! Apparently Germany and Netherlands tend to still be cash-orientated; we're used to France.

Music not at all intrusive when dining outside - it just seems that way when you're in the room. Outside you feel part of it all - so fantastic! All staff at hotel very friendly and helpful.

Make sure you bring an engraved lock to add to the 'sweethearts bridge'.

Room Tip: We had room 303 which faced onto a side street. Perfect, we thought, but coincidentally there was a...

The staff were very pleasant on our arrival. We were shown where to eat and drink, where to shop, where to miss the tourists and where the tourists should go - all with our very own map. The room is relatively spacious with a large bathroom and shower. The water pressure is great and great having two types of shower heads. In our double room we had tea and coffee making facilities and a flat screen tv...took a while to figure out the English channels. Plenty of wardrobe space.

The bad part - we stayed in Summer and as Cologne is one of Germany's hottest cities, we expected air conditioning. The room, even on the fifth floor with the windows open is a boiling hot box. We got no sleep from the overwhelming heat and loud delivery/construction happening below us...and we didn't even overlook the main street or get a view! When we asked for a room with air conditioning we were told the entire hotel doesn't have air conditioning.

The food in Cologne is amazing though! Fantastic place to visit - but look for a hotel with air conditioning if you're coming in Summer.

Right next to the Cathedral and amongst the shopping area, this is a comfortable, convenient and well priced hotel. Whilt there are limited facillities, there are several restaurants including one right below the hotel. Breakfast was fine although the frankfurter sausages repeated on me all day.

I would stay here again although you might need some ear plugs for the cathedral bells.
