“Nice hotel and very friendly staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 5, 2014

Good location in the city centre, close to the Cologne cathedral and the main railway station. I stayed there for 1 night and was ugraded to a deluxe room. The room size is just average for a Hilton, but the bathroom was really huge and had a separate shower. Staff was very friendly and the breakfast in the restaurant was very good. Small drawback: car parking is quite expensive.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with cathedral view.

I've stayed in my fair share of hotels in Europe. Going on 30 I'd say. I've seen it all: 5-star hotels that look more like 2-star ones, 2-star hotels that could pass as 4-star, and underpriced gems that but the overpriced hacks to shame! Thankfully, the Hilton in Cologne is one of the best.

The service I received was mixed, although I put this down to the language barrier: I never received rude service, but sometimes you request can get lost in translation and this led to a few raised eyebrows. For the most part, the staff were informative and kind.

The room was spacious and clean: nothing spectacular, but nice enough. About what you'd expect in a Hilton hotel.

There was nothing I could really fault with the room: the shower and bathroom were great, the air-con worked fine, the bed was comfy, and the TV was big.

However, I had constant issues with the wifi, and being in Cologne for work, this made life difficult for me at times. One day I had to go downstair four times to receive a new login, and I felt as though I was annoying the staff. I'm sure they were just frustrated at the situation, though!

Each morning the breakfast was filled with all types of different food, including a chef on hand to cook your eggs as you like.

It's in a wonderful part of the city, right next to the main cathedral. You could stay here and never have to catch public transport anywhere.

It might come on a bit of the pricey side but I think it's worth it: the hotel is clean, safe and big.

Room Tip: When you walk out of the hotel, turn to your left, walk up the street, and just across the round-abo...

Summary: Business grade hotel one block from train station, one block from famous Cathedral. Check in was fast with pleasant counter staff, our room was spacious (if far from front entrance) but room service was extremely slow and internet was not free.

Details: This is a business hotel and most of the downstairs area is given over to meeting rooms and work space. To get to the elevators to ascend to the rooms, you have to walk a good distance from the front counter along a corridor that makes several turns, almost as if you are heading to another building. NOTE: While the counter help was efficient, no one bothered to tell us there was a ramp just inside the door to allow bags to be rolled up to the elevator level so we struggled up half-a-dozen steps with our luggage without anyone offering to help. There were no signs indicating a ramp, which might be of benefit to clientele.

Our room was a double with ample closet space and virtually no shelving for clothes so it appears the hotel is designed for short term stay (a night or two) rather than for a week. Beds were extremely firm (which we liked but others may not). We found only two English-broadcasting TV stations so if you are one of those who like to hear the taste of home while getting ready for the day, you will be stuck with CNN International and BBC.

The bathroom was big enough for our needs but the shower/bath combination presented the worst of both worlds. The tub was long and narrow with walls that angled in at the bottom. Ample-sized guests would find it difficult to fit comfortably for a bath -- I tried one night and ended up bathing mostly on my side and I'm an average sized woman. Even if you don't take baths, the impact of the narrow, slopping tub walls means you have little room to maneuver under the showerhead. This is not a make-or break situation but a consideration.

Housekeeping seemed sloppy. The floors are wood; when we arrived, we had dust bunnies under tables and chairs and they remained firmly in place throughout our four day stay. We were out and about most days from early morning until mid-to-late afternoon; on two of the days our rooms were not cleaned by the time we returned. One day when we left the staff was cleaning the first room on our side of the hallway (five rooms away from ours); when we returned four hours later, they were still working on that same room. A roll-away bed stayed in the hallway. On our final day, when we had to get ready to an early performance at the Opera and it were pushing on to 3:00, we finally flagged someone down who agreed to change out our towels and take out our trash.

The room rates were not unreasonably high but high enough that we were surprised they did not include complimentary Wi-Fi; instead, we have to pay 20 Euro for 24 continuous-hour access for two devices. (Compare that to our hotel in London (the Strand) where we got complimentary Wi-Fi for up to six devices.) Perhaps business customers can add the charge to their expense accounts; not so leisure travelers. In this day of constant connectivity this seemed a silly, nuisance charge; better to add a dollar or so to each day's bill's for everyone for connectivity if the Hilton cannot stand the idea of providing complimentary internet connectivity.

Final thought, and one for which we doubt the Hilton bears any responsibility: the water in the hotel is so heavily processed that showering became something to avoid. My traveling companion (daughter) has lovely long, thick hair and it took so long to wash away the shampoo (well over thirty minutes) that she resolved to wash her hair only occasionally rather than deal with the residue that never quite left the hair follicles. I have short hair and it still took a long time to wash away the somewhat slimy feel. I'm sure there's a reason for the water to be so processed but we found it problematic.

Getting there: the short 15 minute train ride from the airport leaves you with a five minute walk to the Hilton. Leave the train station on the Cathedral side, head toward the sign for 'Maredo' (steak place). Walk one block (past the steak house), turn right, and the Hilton is about half a block down.

In spite of the issues, the Hilton remains on our short list of hotels to book in Cologne should we return, although we would certainly review other options before making a final decision.

Exiting the Hauptbahnhof on the side facing the Dom, head toward the pink church on the right and walk down the street next to the Rolex building - you'll be able to see the hotel to the right at the next corner. 5-minute walk. Modern style rooms, with wood floors. Separate shower and tub, but the shower is on the small side. Wooden bench at the foot of the bed is great for use as a luggage rack, but is a knee-knocker, if left at the foot of the bed (we moved ours to the side under the window). Thermostat only allows a change of +/- 3 degrees C - opening the window at night was more effective for cooling- street was quiet enough to do so. 3 outlets on the desktop plus one on the nightstand. Bed is very hard.

Room Tip: Based on the floor plan, deluxe rooms are 50% larger than standard rooms.

I was only here for one night so I wanted to stay by the train station. This hotel is so close although I admit I had trouble finding it despite the signs directing you . It is on a side street. The hotel is modern and I loved it .The price was reasonable too. I made the most of the night by walking past the Cathedral, the River and the shopping area. It was a World Cup night so the beer gardens were crowded and rowdy!!

Well another super hilton. The location was right in the city about a 4 minute walk to the dom. From the dom you can walk directly to the shopping area and all kinds of restaurants.

The room was spacious and the bathroom roomy. Only little problem i have is that i check under the beds and it could have been vacuumed better. It is not the only hotel that the chambermaids think that under the bed the floor ends . Since we were staying a fews days i took a big towel and wiped it before i complained.

The breakfast buffet was very, very good and the young cook made a good omelet and fried eggs. The scrambled eggs offered were too dry..watery...needed butter and taste.

Last, at the bar where i ordered a potatoe soup. I was very disappointed. No taste and watery. So i told the barmaid..anja h. She went to the kitchen and told me that she tasted it too. And that "I WAS RIGHT". It was then "on the house" but even then i left it. Well, ANJA H. . Thanks for your honesty!
