“Wonderful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 6, 2009

We enjoyed our stay at this hotel. The front desk staff is wonderful so friendly and helpful. Zero attitude. The room I found to be very relaxing and the bed was sooooo comfortable and big. Very quiet, didn't hear anything from other rooms or outside. The location is good walking distance to many things. But will need a car or public transportation to the zoo. From what i saw the hotel area seemed to have a good nightlife with bars and restaurants. The breakfast, I think we got included was a buffet with many thigns to choice from. Very busy but again it was Sunday AM and most were there for a football match the day b4. Also the price for the stay was very good.

I am staying in Cologne quite often for one night, but this was the first time I tried the Renaissance, which is one of the cheaper ***** hotels. In my opinion, this is clearly a **** property, and seeing that breakfast is not included in the cheaper rates (€ 23), in the end an expensive one at that.

As regards location, the hotel is at least 20 minutes from downtown, and the Friesenplatz is hardly the hub of nightlife in Cologne. In fact, I do not think it is well-placed, as it's quite far both from quality shopping and from old town and entertainment.

Rooms are very small, partially (bathroom, minibar) 70s-style and not updated. There are no safes in the room. The wellness area is small as well, and one can only swim laps in the pool (diagonally) if nobody else is using it. What I objected most to however is the feel and smell of mould everywhere.

My biggest problem was that the heat in my room did not work (the coldest night in Cologne since 25 years), and attempts to fix it took six hours, when I finally had to move. The problem was that the staff kept promising they were working on it and someone had looked at it etc., but when the maintenance person came, he said he had never been told about the problem. The very friendly staff was very apologetic about it (fruits, bar voucher, then even breakfast voucher - they kept updating the treatment as attempts to fix failed one after the other), but I would have enjoyed a warm room and the option to relax during the day.

Next to the staff, the highlight of the hotel was the convenient parking garage - easy to get to and easy to get to the hotel from - but € 24 for 24 hrs is steep even by Cologne standards.

If you want a cheap ***** hotel in Cologne, I think the Savoy is the much better alternative. In the slightly more expensive category, Dom Hotel, Interconti and Sofitel (the latter after construction in front of it is completed, which may take another year) are better and more convenient.

  • Liked — garage convenience, staff friendliness
  • Disliked — cold, inability to fix things, location, smallness of rooms, pool maintenance

Well as most others have stated and using TripAdvisor.com to help make my decision when choosing this hotel, it really lives up to the rave reviews. I already knew i wanted to stay in the general area of this hotel as i have previously stayed at the former Dorint Kongress (now Pullman) Hotel which is centrally located between the shopping and the nightlife districts. Choosing this was also made more easy because of the excellent price i had found for that nights stay two hours in advance of my arrival for the 1400 hrs check in. My "package" via hotels.com was for the Club Package of sorts which included a few small details which made the stay all that much nicer. Free non-alcoholic beverages in the room and in the mini bar, access to the Club Lounge for free drinks (not to include hard drinks) and appetizers. Also a pretty nice buffet for the two of us held in the morning from i think the hours of 7-11 AM with a large spread of food to make both the American and European traveler satisfied (scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, omelets to order...fresh breads, fruits, pudding, meats, cheeses, etc...) The staff also was excellent in being very helpful and attentive to our every need and the underground parking made me feel safer not having to worry so much about pesky eyes preying on my car. Lastly it also allowed for us to take our dog with us and stay in our room without hassle and he was easily welcomed by the staff on hand. If you want a clean, friendly, excellently located and safe place to stay choose this hotel.

  • Liked — Ability to take our pet with us in such a nice hotel
  • Disliked — They forgot our fruit basket in our room upon arrival!

I only stayed at this hotel for one night on a business trip, but I thought it better than most. Check in saff were very friendly, room was a decent size with a desk, and a small fruit bowl. Lots of nice touches in the bathroom, hair conditioner and a comb and other bits, which as I had forgotten my confitioner was a god-send. I had the continental breakfast in ny room eur19, but enough for 2, pastries rolls meat & cheese, coffee and OJ delivered right on time and very nice. tea and coffe making facilites, huge comfy bed.
We only used the bar, but the service was excellant, and in perfect english.
A much better than average hotel

I have stayed at the Cologne Renaissance several times, and was never very excited about the property. This last trip was different.....I had taken ill, and the front desk was instrumental in finding a dr. to make a "hotel" house call. Not only was a dr. found in a timely way, but the front desk person was extremely attentive and called to report the progress of finding a dr., and when he would arrive. Truly helpful.
The room was fine....the location is great. The hotel lobby suffers from plums of smoke, since it seems just about everyone smokes. However, the non smoking room I was in was fine and smoke free.
I'll be back next year.

  • Liked — location
  • Disliked — dense smoke in lobby

Stayed for two nights for prearranged business conference elsewhere in Koeln. Nice room with slightly dated bathroom overlooking back of hotel but felt it was value for money. Dinner menu and bar did not appeal but a local bar and a beer hall in the street behind the hotel were excellent. Hotel was also a short walk to the centre of the city. A good breakfast and overall a very pleasanr stay. Ideal for business but also good value and location for a short city minibreak. Would stay there again for business or a minitrip if similar rate.
