From the outside this romanesque building is glorious. It looms over the smaller buildings around it and looks lovely. Hearing the bells reverberate around this part of the city is awe inspiring (we presumed they were coming from here, but it’s a tough call as there are churches everywhere!)

A beautiful church set in a beautiful location. I knew it was going to be stunning just from the pictures but when we were there in person I stared in awe.

This was a nice looking church on the inside, nothing special. You can pay only 50 cents and go downstairs into the basement and you can see some old Roman foundations which the church was built on. If you are tight on time you can miss this out- the cathedral is much better and if you want Roman ruins the praetorium is also much better

I am no expert on architecture, but if this is Romanesque, then I love Romanesque. Nothing can compete with the cathedral, but this is a beautiful building, gracing the skylight be of Cologne. Excavations near the church, and a huge crane, do not enhance the exterior. But it still stands out as a work of beauty.

Why do I love only the exterior? For some reason a number of other travelers and I tried to figure out how to get inside, at a time it was said to be open, but we could not. That's no a complaint, as function might have been going on, just slightly disappointing.

But the exterior is in its own way as dramatic as the nearby Cathedral. It stands as a powerful sign of religious faith i na rather cynical world. Next time, perhaps I'll be able to experience from the inside, but for now its strong beauty is enough for me.
