“Great for the family, a bit expensive”
Reviewed April 2, 2013

We went to the zoo, family of 4. Unfortunately there's not a discount price for family. 52 € for us.
As we visited, it revealed worthy. A lot of animals. The hippos, lions, bears, crocos etc.. Some of them you can get very close. Very nice children playgrounds inside the zoo. You can spend the whole day there with your kids. When you're done, you also have access to the Aquarium.
Good experience for a zoo, and we've seen many in different countries.

“loved it! 100% recommend”
Reviewed April 1, 2013

me and my boyfriend are great zoo lovers and Koelner Zoo did not dissapoint! we went on a cold snowy day so it wasnt very busy but it was still an excellent day out! so many animals with plenty of space for them all. it was so easy to get to via the tram which was helpful. it was a good price, i thought, for what you got. there were plenty of places to eat in the zoo and loads of seats and benches to sit on. alot were by the animals so you can sit and animal watch for ages if you wanted! we dont have children, but it was such a fantastic place for children to go to! lots of play parks and fun things all around for younger people. i think the zoo is such a cracking place for all ages to go to. i would 100% recommend going here on you visit to Cologne.

“A Great Day Trip!”
Reviewed March 31, 2013

You won't go wrong visiting the Köln "Zoo/Tiergarten und Botanischer Garten"; as a matter of fact, it would be hard to see all of the different animals and exhibits. Of course, the elephants, gorillas and lions/tigers are the big attractions, (I admit that the White Leopard is most impressive!) but check out the tropical birds, (reminds me of Home!) musk ox, buffalo, rhinos, prarie dogs, and the African Penguins and seals are show stealers! The Kölner Seilbahn (Sky-Ride/Gondola) is adjacent to the Zoo and is also worth the €7,50 round trip! Great views of Köln and definitely worth the money!

“Super fun, Must-Experience Zoo with unexpected surprises!”
Reviewed March 31, 2013

The Koelner Zoo was such a great experience! I highly recommend it to anyone visiting this lovely city. Here are my tips:
1. Take the Zoo Express mini-train which departs from the Cathedral, right next to the Tourism Office. It's around 6 Euros for a trip to the zoo and back; and also enables you to get a discounted entry ticket to the zoo for 15 Euros.
2. The Zoo also houses an aquarium and has the botanical garden next door; your ticket will allow you entry to the aquarium as well - to cover all of these attarction, keep plenty of time in hand.
3. The Zoo is a little bit of adventure as signage in English is almost non-existent. It was pretty cold that day but I still saw plenty of animals so don't let anyone deter you from visiting the zoo in cold weather.
4. The most unexpected parts of the zoo are the tropical rainforest-like rooms which they have - it blew my mind to enter the first one, which was the area which housed the tropical birds. Just imagine, walking in from the bitter cold outside, into a room which was easily 30+ degrees Centigrade - the camera fogged up instantly! And then seeing/hearing the most beautifully coloured birds, singing and warbling in their full glory! It's an open area so you could actually see the birds right in front of you...they were so comfortable with visitors, merrily walking about and doing their own thing.
5. After that, you have the elephant area - again, since it was cold, they were all inside, but they seemed to be having fun. There was a little picture and name for each elephant and various elephant-related decorations in that area. It's a vast indoor area where they hang about, eat and drink, and it opens out to a much wider open area where they'd normally move about
6. I also enjoyed the African-themed indoor area which housed the crocodiles and the hippos - the hippos were magical to watch. The male stayed submerged underwater for a long time and the two females seemed cautious of him. They are beautiful creatures and being able to watch them from up close was fantastic.
7. The other highlights of the zoo included the giraffe area. This was the first time i was seeing them from so close and i was struck by their beauty - unimaginably tall, beautiful chocolate mosaic-like designs. Standing there looking at them nuzzling each other and communicating in their own way, i felt so awed by these gentle creatures...
The zoo also had beautiful cat family members - so one could see the tigers, lions, cheetah, snow leopard and panthers. I enjoyed watching these regal creatures. They were so beautiful! The same goes for the variety of birds - cranes, exotic birds from Africa, swan etc. Don't miss the california seals who put on such a show - they were so sociable and friendly and lovely to watch!

Overall the zoo is spread across several acres of land and it's a vast, open playground for people like me who love to walk about under blue skies. It's a liberating environment and in my delight i also did a piroutte in the middle of the open ground of the zoo...it was just a wonderful feeling to see all these creatures. I know of some who don't agree with the concept of zoos, but to be honest, after leaving a place like this, one can only be more determined to conserve nature and her bounty.

The Zoo also had a few eateries and a small shop right at the exit where you can make some purchases as mementoes of the visit.

I would really like to visit the zoo again and this time i'd carry my camera's battery charger with me!

“Fun day out!!!”
Reviewed March 26, 2013 via mobile

We had a great time here! Lots of animals to see and the zoo is easy to understand and no need for a map! The food and drink is reasonably priced for a tourist attraction and opposite the main zoo there is also an aquarium! A must do for everyone who visits cologne! Elephant enclosure is great!
